New Car - (not many of you will like)

Nice car John, it looks very "futuristic". What material are those side panels made of? They look squishy. Is it the same stuff on the corners?

Although most trolley damage is done to the backs of cars rather than the sides. Having said that, it looks like the Cactus has extra protection on the front bumper so probably has similar on the rear. IIRC the protection panels are both hard to damage and easy to replace when they are scratched. SHOULD be cheap too but I bet they're not as cheap as they should be!

Thanks - Its made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) filled with air and yes it is squishy when pushed but not to squishy if you know what I mean. The corners do also have some kind of padden on them to but not raised like the sides

To be honest I thought there would be more comments like yours and I felt the same way the first time I saw the sides - although I did like the front and back which look very smart and futuristic in my opinion.

Its not a sports car or anything but I did really enjoy driving it, the steering wheel is slightly oval but not bad so it annoys you and reminds me of an airplane or something and the whole front cabin is like some kind of cockpit with digital displays etc...... It is a very futuristic feel to it and its VERY comftable

I've seen quite a few of them on the roads, and have to say that I'm in the 'hate' camp - but what I think really doesn't matter.
It's your car and if you like it, have fun with it.

BTW I'll confess to having a strange compulsion to get out of the car and poke the panel bits to see what they felt like when one was stopped next to me at traffic lights . . . fortunately I managed to resist, but don't be surprised if random strangers start accosting you when you're in stationary traffic :lol:

When do you get to pick it up?

It certainly is a Marmite car I reckon - so what do you not like about it - is it the bumps ? - that's what I did not like

Yeah - mainly the bumps.
Although I'm just generally not a huge fan of the whole 'crossover' genre anyway, so even without the bumps I'm starting off from a pretty negative position.
 
In the right colour (dark) they don't look to bad and ideal for car parks. It seems near me a high percentage of people only seem to know their door is open when it hits the car next to them! The style is completely the opposite to most current designs, the favour at the moment seems masses of unprotected side panels with nice lines, trouble is these show up every ding. Not sure about the red mirrors in the posted image.

and its certainly pretty erm, pretty er, pretty something anyway :D

TBH I'd never seriously knock someone else's choice of car,
Some drive certain cars to be pretentious, other's to compensate for something, or just to get them from A-B in reasonable comfort and time.

( mine does all 3 BTW :D )
 
What I do like about Citroen, and always have, is that they are not afraid of being different.

I wonder how easy it is to keep those panels clean, and how they will age.
 
Hmmm Citroen that well known 4x4 specialist !- that bubble wrap down the side will be a lot of use down a hedge row which presumably it is designed for?
Sorry, Hate camp for me - but if it floats your boat enjoy it we can't all be the same and the world would be a poorer place if we were.

It's certainly not 4X4 at all just a crossover type design but I reckon those bumps which seem fairly strong would help keep the paint scratch free

That should be interesting to own and drive - hope you enjoy it.

We recently went through searching for a replacement car, and I seriously considered a Cactus, but just couldn't find a 1.6 diesel at the right price and bought a Mini countryman instead (it's a great drive, after years of French cars and squishy suspension). We've had many Citroens over the years (2 X 2CV, 3 X CX plus a GSA=piece of junk) and really like the alternative looks and design of this. I understand they are lighter than many conventional cars of similar size, and have been deliberately simplified to reduce manufacturing costs. The side panels on a couple of used cars I've seen haven't aged well, but as suggested, they may be cheap to replace.
 
Yeah I can imagine the panels will fade over time etc but only time will tell. Actually the 1.2 turbo is supposed to be the one to get and quite nippy. But you are right the car has clever design to make it very light and it gets something like 80mpg..... See who's laughing now ;)
 
Make sure that the one you get has got the doors put on correctly, the ones in the OP seem to have been put on inside out ;-)
 
And the Mini does 45mpg (vs the pug 307 estate it replaced which did about 55mpg).

When it worked, the Daf rubberband transmission was brilliant. The handling of an MGB wasn't, nor was the power delivery from the B series engine.

You've gone for the right colour for panel longevity, black does far better in sunlight than other colours. Blue being the worst followed by yellow and red.

John, I wonder how much the bubble-panels are & if you can easily change them yourself?

(might be worth buying a few in readiness ;) )

They are actually pretty rigid and only flex a bit .... Not really squishy as they look. There is someone who has developed paint for them he is just waiting for authorisation from Citron then will offer lots of colour combinations

Don't get me wrong I never put this post up for approval or anything I just know its a Marmite type car so would spark some fun discussions which it has :) I am so far very happy with my choice, great car to drive all the toys you could want, full warranty, excellent mpg and a car that's not the same as everything on the road.... and all for a lot less than a four year old Nissan with 3 months warranty o_O

To be honest I have always been the type of person who goes my own way, I don't follow trends or get stuck on brands etc. You would not see my camping outside an apple shop. I just buy what I think works for me and go with it.

I think it's the most ridiculous car design ever. Why would anyone want a car with what are essentially those rubber mats you use to prevent slipping in the shower stuck to the doors for? Why is it called "cactus"? I hope you like it, and I hope you have fun in it.... but not as much fun as I have laughing at them on the road :)
 
Saw one of these for the first time last week and quite liked it (y)
It was in red, that was it's only fault ;)
The real test is driving one though, I've fallen out with a lot of cars on test drives !!!

All cars I've driven had reverse gears, and yes I do make sure to try reversing when I do a test drive,
to see what the vision is like, some cars are rubbish and we don't all rely of parking sensors !

It must be a gay car design, it cant be designed just for women or else the bath mats would cover the entire car! :exit:
 
Can I just point out that the stuff on the side is very similar (moulded plastic) to what a LOT of cars have on the side - the black plastic trim down the side. It does not really feel any different its not rubber or anything its just bigger and bolder

Give it a go I was not keen at all then I had over an hour's test drive and did not want to take it back
