New Canon digital SLR camera - which one?

I am thinking of buying a Canon digital SLR camera and would be grateful for any advice on which one.

I would like it to have an 18 - 55 mm lens and also a 70 - 200 mm or a 70 - 300 mm lens. I might get lenses which are a different brand from the Canon camera if they will both work together. I do not know whether to buy all the camera equipment together or separately. Can anyone reading this help me with advice on what to buy? Is it possible to buy a Tamron lens or other lens which works on a Canon digital SLR camera?

I was thinking of spending up to £1000 for the digital SLR Canon camera and the two lenses I need for it so I am not looking to purchase one of the more expensive cameras.

I am also thinking of getting a digital compact camera. I do not have a set limit for the digital compact camera - but perhaps up to £250 although I was thinking of spending less. I know that some are on sale for under £100.

I read that some people now use their i-phone camera to take pictures instead of using digital compact cameras.

Does anyone have any recommendations on getting a Canon digital SLR camera and lenses for £1000 or less and about which Canon or other brand digital compact camera to buy?

Thank you for reading this and for any advice and questions and I hope that I will be able to ask questions if there is anyone reading this who can help with advice.

You can get something like a 600d or a 100d with kit lens(around 500-600) and use the rest to purchase the 70-200 F4 L for around 500-600.

What stuff will you be shooting?

With a 100d you wont need a compact camera as the 100d is the smallest DSLR in the market

How about a Canon 700d with the 18-55IS STM lens, then the Canon 55-250 (£165) or Tamron 70-300VC (£290). The link I've put in for the 700d has a free bag and a free SD card.
You can get the Canon 70-200 F4 L for under £490 if you want to go for say the 600D with 18-55 (£420).

For the compact have a good look at the Panasonic TZ25 (£140) / 30 (£200) and the Sony HX20V (£180). I have a hx20v to take with me when I want wide angle - long zoom but don't want to take the dslr.

Thank you for your advice Jonney. What do the 600d and 100d do that less expensive Canon SLR cameras do not?

Day and night pictures of buildings.

What about having a spare camera if the battery goes on the main camera while I am out taking pictures?

Thank you for the links, but I cannot get them to work.

They all look like very nice cameras.

Hi,

Do you still have the Nikon D7000 you purchased around this time last year? Is there a reason you want to move from Nikon to Canon as the lenses will not work on a Canon camera.

I bought a new Nikon D7000 today - my first DSLR.

Thank you to everyone here who has replied to my questions and helped me with advice on purchasing a new camera.

With the D7000 I also bought a new wide angle lens (Sigma 10 - 20 mm) and am looking forward to taking more wide angle pictures (I started off in SLR photography using a wide angle lens).

Also, with regards to your requirement for a second camera in case the battery runs out on your first one, I'd suggest it would be a better option to simply buy additional batteries which can be bought for a few pounds each and leave them in your bag charged up unless you specifically need to carry two cameras.

Cheers
Steve

100d/600d would have better features and sensor then older cheaper canon dslr and the part about running out of battery is a strange one??

why? because you can buy spare batteries. cheap ones from ebay too so i see absolutely no reason to buy a compact.

why limit your dslr equipments budget over a compact? use that spare money to buy a nice lens like a 70-200 f4

No I do not have that camera. I am now thinking of purchasing a Canon digital SLR camera.

Thank you for your advice Steve.

Can you recommend any shops or websites where I can get spare batteries for the digital SLR camera I buy?

I'd go somewhere like Wex for spare batteries. I went to amazon and paid £45 instead of £100 at Jessops and the battery is terrible, even in normal british weather conditions it will suddenly drop from 65% to zero with no warning. I made the mistake of going away for a weekend with just the battery in there and got about a dozen before it just stopped working to the extent the camera wouldn't turn on.

The spare I got from Jessops (obviously a while back) did 1600 shots over 7 days in a 60D including some LCD usage. I'd never go ebay for batteries, personally.

Personally I'd purchase from 7DayShop instead and not worry about Canon OEM batteries. I've been shooting for the last 4 years with one canon battery and 4 no brand batteries and have had no problems at all. I think I probably paid less than £10 so I wouldn't pay £45 for one!

Cheers

Thank your for your advice jmc41.

Have you thought about second hand rather than new. Have a look at mpb photographic and you'll get a warranty and more for your money.
