Morning everyone,

I was just wondering if anybody has used this lens our had any thoughts on this.

Would it be a viable alternative to the L version?

Would it be a good walk around lens perhaps if can't stretch to the cost of an L lens.

Just people's view really

Phil

I've not used that one but I have the L version, like many I found it to be a very good lens and the IQ was sharp.
You can pick up a used version for probably a bit less than the price for the new non L version.
I think I have seen a couple recently sell for around £350 in the classified section on here.

Would it be a viable alternative to the L version?l
Define "viable".

Points in favour:
* It has the same focal length range.
* It's smaller and lighter.
* It's cheaper.

Points against:
* It isn't a constant aperture.
* It's not as good optically.

But you knew all that anyway. The missing piece of the jigsaw is how important these issues are to you, and only you know that.

It might just be an improvement on the L version?

I got an L 24-105 from the forum here last week for £250. A few tiny cosmetic dings and the red L ring is missing, but it's a proper one nevertheless ;-)

24-105 STM with its silent STM focusing is intended primarily as a kit lens for the growing number of video makers. It looks like a decent performer but as a 24-105L non-video user, I've not been tempted.

Just bought one of these for my 6D, price was too good to pass up £200 (white box). Primary use will be travel... Anyone else purchased?

Must admit not used the new one, but the L version is my favourite walkabout lens.

I was tempted by the L but couldn't quite stretch to it plus I'm not doing so much photograph at the moment-but needed a decent walkabout

I haven't used the new one but also have the L. I love the range of focal distances it gives. Great as a general Walkabout lens

Phil, what body are you going to use it on? It's designed for full frame and on a crop body it's effectively 38.4 at the wide end, which imho makes it unusable as a general walkabout lens on a crop body.

I'll be using it on a 6D so a nice walkabout lens. Had a quick play, focusing seems very fast and incredibly quite - way better than the 40mm STM I have.

Hi folks
Just returned from a x2 week hol, where I used my 24-105 90% of the time - verdict: it's great!
I haven't go through all the raw files but the JPEGS look to have good contrast and nice and sharp [from memory I leave the in-camera sharpening at 0]
It's light, quick focusing. I'm really happy with it, I have used the L version but didn't miss it for this type of photography [holiday/travel]
