Looks like I will be selling both mkIIIs and working with one body for a while...

Warehouse Express, im guessing the likes of Park and Calumet will quickly follow suit

This sums up my feelings better than I did. Well done :)

This release has to be about video, as it's the only real reason to move away from the 1d MK3.

I'm starting to wish I'd jumped ship when I had the chance.
 
there are actually a couple of features I'd really like. The automatic AF point shift when you change the orientation for example looks really useful for what I do. Similarly more pixels does mean I could get use bigger crops when necessary.

Apart from that though :shrug: Really can't see me going for this, the price point just isn't right.

Yes I guess so.. if it weren't so costly then a 1D II upgrade to a IV would be a no brainer for myself... but £4500?! :bang: £3000 - £3500 would have been much more acceptable... and there we have the US price!!

... I could on the other hand pick up 2x 1D IIIs for less than that... :thinking:

That's the key bit Phil. You can get 2x1DIII used for less money that 1x1DIV.

I really think the "arms race" is coming to an end and it will get harder and harder to justify upgrading each step. I know a number of wildlife pros who are still running 1DII/1DsII and avoided the MkIII entirely. Not because of the AF issues but because the incremental step could not be justified.
 
I'd be surprised if Stuart from Digital Depot wont be offering a good discount on pre-orders.;) I'd certainly be asking him if I was interested.

I'd be surprised. They'll want to milk the 1Ds4 market first. I'm not convinced they will for a long time.

Tried that on the 7D on the fashion shoot a couple of weeks ago. Was really useful.

I was thinking of a similar system to the 7D, not the 1D4, so there would still be a premium for the pro body.

To be honest I wouldnt touch warehouse express with a bargepole .. will look for a real shop I can go get.. gonna go check out a few places now see what the script is.

Can's say im excited about the 1D MKIV at all. Maybe if it were full frame...

Looks like Canon are keeping the 1D and 1Ds...completely stupid in my opinion, we shouldn't have to buy 2 different bodies for two different purposes...that's why Nikon are the market leader at the moment - the D3 can do everything...all for £3k.

It's all about marketing and sales, why have two bodies you say, well that's simple.

There folk who will buy a £4500 1d camera but there are far fewer who would buy a £7000 1Ds , by have just the FF 1Ds canon would lose sales.

Same reason there are different specs for the same model of car.
 
Makes you realise what an absolute bargain the 7D is going to look like when the price settles down.

Nikon don't seem to be loosing any sales with the D3 that does everything.

I'm not saying they should get rid of the 1D and just have the 1Ds...they should bring out a body that does everything, and doesn't cost an absolute fortune.
 
I was waiting for this, and it it had been in the £3500 range I'd have bought one, but not sure it's worth the near £2000 over a new mkIII.

I was expecting 4k to be honest... the extra MP and the extra ISO will deffo be worth it for me and it will make a massive difference to the pictures I produce as I do so much in poor lighting condition... even sat afternoon KO in winter is bad enough lighting to warrant it.

The mk4 extra spec would be used to its max for me so its worth it.

You're not going to be shooting with a single camera though?
 
Now that the likes of D3s's and 1D IV's have HD video, how long before pros are refused entry to events because of conflicts with TV rights holders?

FA, FIA, NFL, IOC...
 
Its been announced on Cameratown news emails that I subscribe to. Man, it looks good. Also news of possible firmware update for the 5D Mk 2 to enable selective fram rate.

That's a massive point and covers pretty much any event that sells the tv rights, ie most sports events and this is a sports camera.

This is really annoying me for some reason

As an example, with an EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens, the EOS-1D Mark IV can track a subject approaching at 50 kph/31 mph up to about 8 meters/26.2 feet away. This is the same specification as the EOS-1D Mark III. However, with the 39 cross-type AF points, the Mark IV's subject detection and tracking performance have improved substantially over the EOS-1D Mark III's. This combination of hardware and software (AI Servo II AF algorithm) improvements enables a more stable AI Servo AF control.

I picked this up elsewhere, but it's a bummer if it's true!

A bit more info... (from Rob Galbraith)


The camera's 39 cross-type AF points act as cross type with any f/2.8 maximum aperture lens, as well as with certain f/4 lenses or lens+teleconverter combinations that add up to f/4. (In all previous 1-series digital SLRs, only the centre point would retain its cross type detection capabilities when an f/4 lens was attached.)

The eligible Canon lenses are:

  • [*]Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L
    [*]Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS
    [*]Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS + Extender EF 1.4x II
    [*]Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS + Extender EF 2x II
    [*]Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS + Extender EF 1.4x II
    [*]Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS + Extender EF 1.4x II
This is thought to be the complete list of f/4 glass that can reap the benefit of 39 cross-type points, which means other lenses, such as the EF 500mm f/4L IS or the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L (non-IS) + Extender EF 1.4x II, will not have the benefit of cross-type operation from all 39 AF points. The centre point, however, will continue to provide cross-type sensitivity with any f/4 lens or combo not on the list above.

As with the EOS-1D Mark III and earlier top-end Canon digital SLRs, all 45 AF points are single-line sensitive with f/5.6 lenses. With f/8 Canon EF lenses (this really means a lens+teleconverter together, such as the EF 600mm f/4L IS mated to an Extender EF 2x II), the AF system will continue to function, but only the centre point is operational and is single-line sensitive.
 
I think this is a big disappointment for me. Not having improved AF sensitivity on the 500/600 lenses or other popular choices like the 70-200 f/4 or 300 f/4 seems an oversight to me. Especially when the 7D is reported to be cross sensitive to f/5.6

The other issue I read is that spot AF only works on lenses with an AF Stop button (200/2, 300/2.8, 400/2.8, 500/4, 600/4 and 800/5.6)
 
As a heavy 500mm f4L user, that's not what I'd have expected from a camera of this class. :(

So what is the D3x for.....and what is the 1D4 missing that means you cant use it in the studio?
 
I am very disappointed by the UK price. £4.5k is way more than I expected. Oh well, I will stick with my 5D for another few years.
 
The 1dmk4 was going to be my next camera ..till it was announced. 4.5k is just ridiculous. I know its down to the weak pound but I cant justify that price on a body no way.
Also the specs are no where near what I was expecting. Photography wise (excluding the hd video) its not a big enough jump from my 1dmk3 now.
The same focus point system for my 500f4 is just shocking.
At the end of the day I just cant see how the 1dmk4 "upgrades" would help me capture a decent shot that I cant get with my mk3 now.
