I am getting a new camera at Christmas and was wondering which one would you all recommend. I have the nikon d5100 atm but I am looking to upgrade after Christmas. I want something bigger and better :)

Thanks for your help

What sort of budget are you looking at and is there a particular type of photography you are interested in?

Its often the case thtat people will recommend the camera that they own. You need to think about what you need from the camera, for example do you want or need full frame? If not I notice that someone on the For Sale forums is looking to trade his Nikon D7000 for a Nikon D5100 with some cash. That may be a good route. However as I said there are going to be a few choices depending on your needs. I would recommend checking out some reviews.

Don't we all Ruth.

But unless you say what you want to do that your present camera cannot, you'll probably just end up spending money for the sake of it.

D5100 is a very capable camera. What lenses have you got? A decent flash?

Yep, the D5100 is a great camera....you'd notice a bigger difference in your photos if you bought a decent lens or two. What do you have already lens-wise?

It's not letting me comment on the classifieds adds x

I'd get a better lens if I were you, you will notice a bigger increase in quality getting better glass.

I believe the d7000 and the d5100 have the same sensor so you won't see any real difference in image quality with the same lens.

I went from a d5100 to a d7000, the main difference I noticed was easier access to different controls and functions as I wanted to move away from the semi auto modes to full manual. So it was a worthwhile upgrade for me (and the fact I got it for a new one at an extremely good price helped in the decision), but I did have a 16-85mm on it to start which was replaced shortly after with nikons 24-70mm.

Hi Neil. I have 18-55mm lens x

I'd have to agree with other people here maybe better going for some new glass especially as you only have the stock 18-55mm lens. Any particular style you're interested in so the good people on here with far more experience than me can advise you of some or other kit to spend your budget on.

Thanks guys. I might invest in better glass as I only have the standard vr kit too.

I'd go against the trend ;) and say either a d7k (newer model) or d300(s)/d90 used.

d300 (several on the for sale bit) are going for around 500.

As for lenses, if you like prime, try the 35mm f1.8g (either on the suggested camera or your current one) around 180ukp (possibly less if you look around a bit) or used.

It is a nice lens although I seem to still be getting missed focus :/

If you did go for the older d300/s type camera, you could look at a 50mm f1.4d (around 200ukp new .. probably 150 used?)

Depends if you've used primes or are more happy to use zoom...
(I've heard there is a tamron 17-55 I think f2.8? meant to be very nice).

Pics to the ones I've taken in the signature.

Good hunting!

Edit: Thats assuming you want to stay with nikon - might be best to pop to a camera store and handle as many as you can or go to a local camera meet?

What does your D5100 not do, that a new camera will?

You would IMO be better getting a new lens or two that allows you to do something different. Couple of small fast primes for example...

Look on the second hand store websites mpb/Harrison's etc. I had the 35 f1.8 and the 50 f1.8. Both great. Should improve your pics more than a new body!
