I am in the market for a new camera but being a tight wad unsure as what to upgrade to, would like to keep all the len's if that becomes undo-able then i could dispose of them and go the whole hog



so choices are
1000D
40D
50D < new


5D < new
5D MrkII < New
1D s III < second hand

or recommend one i would like to stay with canon :thumbs:

That's quite a spread of choices, Mark, you've got everything from a sideways step (the 1000D) right through to full frame :thinking:

A 40D or 50D would seem like the obvious upgrade, depends if you feel like changing to FF and spending £££ though ;)

Hi flash the sideways step is playing safe just in case i have to start all over again my brain would pop but the 1000D is upgrading from the 400D all the same, i can only handle little changes so i have to cover all options. and because i post it here maybe there are not as many changes i need to adapt to the guy who runs the camera club owns a 5D so i could always ask him for advice thats if we get on:lol::D,

I would say either the 40d, 50d or 5d. Depends if you want the 5d for full frame, or if you would be happier with a 40d/50d.

If i was buying now, id look at the 50d rather then the 40d, BUT its all dependant on budget and what your willing to splash out on.

40D is the Canon bargain of the moment. £589 from 7dayshop and £60 cashback.

Even a used 1DSIII will set you back over £3k I'd reckon. If you're not sure you need it, you probably don't.

In your position, I'd let the dust settle on the 5DII and buy a used 5D from an upgrader. They're going for about £800 used now and could drop a bit further.

I did the same when I got my 1DsII, bought one that someone had swapped out for newer kit.

Good advice i may plumb for the 5D full frame second hand and a grip with a couple of batteries to bring me up to where i am now, As i say there is a guy at camera club who runs it has a 5D so not short of advice or help and i still have the largest camera club in England on hand :D , if i go for a 40D 1000D 50D i would still have to upgrade the grip and all that and then upgrade again to a 5D.

I have both the 5D and 40D. They're very different cameras and i love them both for different reasons.

The 5D is fantastic for anything that requires a bit of time and thaught. (Portrait, macro, landscape, indoor achetecture etc.) However, for candid photography, sport, aviation, street wildlife etc. it doesn't have the frame burst to really meet those demands.

The 40D is the other way round to the strengths and weaknesses above IMO. Obviously that's a sweeping statement but I think its generally holds true.

I couldn't choose between the two and ever feel happy about not having the other one BUT if I had to choose I'd go with the 5D. The full frame and tones produced are outstanding.

For you, it depends on what you like to photography most:
Wildlife / Sport - 40D
Landscape / Macro / Composition - 5D

All just my opinion but hope it helps. :)

I am glad this topic has come up.

I currently have a 400d and I am looking to buy something a bit more professional, and also with a higher ISO etc.

My choices are the 50d or the 5d. However I am not wanting anything way to expensive.

Really tempted by the 50d esp since there are great deals on just now with the IS Kit lens and offers of free 8GB sandisk cards.

I will watch this topic closely and see peoplels views and thoughts

well that is a fantastic thread i fell a handling session coming on, i like my aircraft and plan to do sport as well, is the 5D left for dead in these fields by the 40D ????

It must be capable of some good sport shots what is the frame burst i would only be looking for about 5 or 7 shots one after the other, + i like time to set shots up time is what i have in abundance.

40D and the 50D have 6.3 fps and a sustained burst rate of 17+ RAW shots. Not sure if the 5D can keep up with that.

Not all sports require the scattergun shooting approach - but sometimes a few frames helps - crash sequences, football / rugby tackles etc.,
 
just read the 40D is a blinding camera fast and furious this is much much harder than i thought, tipping scales back to the 40D.

A little birdie in the trade told me prices on the 40D are set to drop early Nov - he's been pretty on the ball up to now.

Sticking to the "tight wad" theme here. Hang on till nearer xmas as Canon have given us entry level users a xmas present in my opinion. Although both the 40D/50D will run alongside each other and the release of the 5D II. This still means in retail terms that the 40D and 5D are "old stock" and will will bring down the price of both making them both very attractive to the XXXD users.
You will be able to buy either, used for a very good price over the coming months or if you prefer new body, say the 40D, at 589 pounds (sorry I have no pound sign on my laptop) plus 60 pounds cashback = 529, sell your 400D for say 150, you've got a 40D for under 400 quid. Pretty good in my eyes.
Thats my plan anyway.
 
Hi all, great thread this forgive this it might come across stupid, but I will be looking to upgrade soon, so with the vast choices of lenses, the question must be which camera will be best for all photos, unless you decided to specialise, but I suspect the majority of people on here shoot everything.
So unless you are going to go a certain direction Wedding or motorsport surely a good all round camera is best.

Well to be honest sports, aircraft, motor racing,macro, are my top one's with landscape and portrait reserved for family days out, not as important to me a good all-rounder but these two have different uses. :bang:< is how i feel iwould like to make the right desion for two reasons

1 to allow me to get on with taking photographs

2 the wife would like me to stop spending money at some point in my life on myself :D and spend some on her :thinking:

It looks to me that you have very little choice....40D or 50D. Anything else (except the 450D) is going to effectively shorten your lenses and you won't like it much...the 450D will leave you forever wondering.

50D.....
Assuming that your long lenses are good enough, and the subject and conditions are obliging, then you'll have the potential of a 1.2x Teleconverter by way of cropping in PP when lined up against the 40D.
The downside is the thinner DOF required to photograph your wallet.
