I've just took the plunge and ordered myself a 5d mk iii, I'm upgrading from a 550d so I'm hoping to be blown away in terms of performance, I just need to sell my old camera and efs 17-55 lens but I'm unsure what to go for? Liking the looks of the sigma 85mm 1.4, Or do I play it safe and get the 24-70?

The difference between 70mm and 85mm is minimal but the difference between f/1.4 and 2.8 can be significant. The answer depends on whether low light or versatility is more important to you.

Don't expect going to FF to be a solution for low light. It helps, but more light (faster aperture) helps more.

I own both. They are different tools for different jobs.

As a 'walkabout lens' the 85mm would be a bit of an odd choice. I can see a 35mm or 50mm but the 24-70 or 24-105 is a safer bet.

I have that Siggy and it's a very nice lens indeed.

I used to like wider lenses but these days my most used lens is a 55mm on MFT giving an EFL of 110mm. 85mm would seem rather wide after that :D

I have gone out with just my 85mm fitted to my 5D, and managed just fine :D

I hope you're very happy with it.

PS. It's possibly the best lens I've ever used... better than the Siggy 50mm f1.4 (I have one and it's lovely but the 85mm is even more so) although the 150mm f2.8 is pretty good too.

24-105 is a great walk about lens, but if you don't mind walking towards or away from your subject the 50mm would be fine too

I've got a 5D2, I use the 24-105, it's a great walk about lens. You have a good range of focal length and it is light compared to the 2.8 24-70.

If you don't need the 2.8 then it's a great lens with IS.

I've already have the 50mm 1.8, I'm thinking I could get a 24-105 for a general lens including home studio stuff and the odd landscapes walks etc, and the sigma 85mm for portraits and the dreamy bokeh for price of a mk1 24-70..... I like the bokeh the primes give... It's a tough one.

Don't ignore the canon EF85mm F1.8, its a sharp lens with lovely creamy bokeh, reasonably light and cheaper than the other options too so maybe allowing you to grab an EF50mm F1.4 at the same time to upgrade your 50mm?

In a previous post you said you like the "idea" of the shallow DOF...and for the most part "bokeh" is not a primary lens consideration.

It sounds to me like you have money to spend but no particular need. That's fine, but it's spending money for no real purpose... If you just want to get "something better" to try/play with ok, but recognize it as such... I have a couple $k sitting in storage that I acquired that way.

It's probably better to wait until there is a particular problem you are facing frequently that buying something will help with. Just saying...

I was bought a 50 1.8 for Christmas. Since then it hasn't been off my 5D mkII and my 24-105 has remained in the bag (together with the 70-300). Went to Rome and Venice in February and all I took was the 50 mainly because of Ryanair's cabin bag weight limits. Once there though I didn't miss my other lenses at all, not once. It's much more fun walking around without that big lump of glass hanging off my shoulder.

Dunno what to do now though. Maybe I'll sell the 24-105 and buy a wide prime. Decisions, decisions ...

Get a sigma 50mm F/1.4 and Canon 24-70 F/2.8. Thos ear the 2 lenses I would say are the best for the mk3, the sigma is crazy sharp and wonderful on FF and the same can be said for the 24-70!
