So I have just got a new Nikon d3100 what would be the best lens to get first? I have to standard one you get with it but what next? Cheers:)

Sell it and get a Canon

What sort of photos do you take?

As Martin said, totally depends on what kind of stuff you want to shoot, what's your budget?

Erm mostly macro photos, of like the face and not too expensive but I'm new like the whole photography thing so how much is cheap?

It depends on what you like too photo giving out a recommended lens and a budget your looking at spending too ? :)

same post as mine appeared as im typing :bonk:

For people shots, a great cheap lens would be the 50mm 1.8. Around £60 2nd hand for Canon, similarly priced for Nikon I think. New they are around £100.

For close / macro try a 60 or 100mm macro lens. More expensive, than the previous lens.

Cheap for a lens is anything under £300 I guess. The majority of lenses are more expensive.

Look for a second hand macro on ebay or shops
Or even go into a shop to try out some

I dont know nikon so cant tell you any specifically

Got the same camera about 2 months ago now as my first DSLR, bought a 35mm F1.8 and 55-200 non VR lens (which is great for bird/animal shots in good light).

50mm 1.8. Great value, very versitile, and will make a huge difference to your images.

35mm f/1.8 is a much more usable length on a DX body than a 50mm for most people. that would be my first choice :)

If you are looking at the 50mm f1.8 then bare in mind the 50 f1.8 AFD will not auto focus on your D3100. You need the 50 f1.8 AF-s.

I've got the 35mm f1.8, great lens. Although I'm not sure what you mean by "mostly macro photos, of like the face". Have you quantified what your current lens doesn't do, it might help us make suggestion.

Use what you have first for a while get used to the camera. If you then need a lens go for the 35mm as it will af on your camera. As above the 50mm is good buy you have to get the slightly expensive afs one for your camera.

I agree with this!

When I started out with my SLR after trying the kit lens, I wanted more reach and bought a 55-300mm then a 35mm f1.8. I've used the telephoto a few times but not often enough. It really depends on what you shoot - if your into wildlife, or sports or something needing that longer reach then invest in a good telephoto lens (heard the 70-300mm seems to be the best without spending thousands). At some point, you may get the 35mm fixed. You'll be wondering what the fuss is all about as I was, but the ability to stop down to 1.8 is fantastic and the quality of pictures it produces for a small cost is great!
