Hi all, I’m new and after some advice. I work in a primary school and we need seven new cameras for our classes. We take photos of activities and work and then print them out so the photos need to be good quality for books but we would also like to record. We are unsure whether we need WiFi or not or whether we can just use a cable to put the photos on our system. Budget is very shaky but we were looking at below £100 on each camera, if I’m honest the cheaper the better but then we may not get the quality we need.
None of us are knowledgeable so any advice is appreciated!
Thank you

At that budget your phones are going to be the best bet I would imagine. How large are you going to be printing?

Unfortunately, we can’t use our phones due to safeguarding. It’s a shame as the photos are always lovely from the new iPhones. We print to around A6-A7 size

You don't need wifi. Digital cameras use a card, usually SD card which can be removed from the camera and then put into a slot on your computer, or into a card reader which connects to you computer with a USB cable. Some cameras will connect directly to your computer with a cable, but they will still use a card to save the images on - which can be removed.

You could ask the parents if anyone has a camera they would like to donate?

My children's school used to have a 'point and shoot' camera (one where it auto selects the settings and you don't have to worry about them) to record activities, with success. The downside of a point and shoot is it doesn't always know what is important to you and may focus on the wrong subject, or expose for the wrong part of the scene, but it may be all you need. There is a whole learning curve with photography which many of us find a pleasure, but it may be tricky to get the results you want immediately.

I think you have to be careful in terms of safeguarding using a camera too. I know I had to be careful what I shared picture wise when I helped out at school.

When you say record, do you mean video?

thanks for the info! Yes we sometimes record the child when doing an activity as evidence. For example a speech and language assessment can be supported with video. In my class we manly just take pictures of the children doing an activity and upload them to our server that day

Going to be compacts at that price, more than adequate
My wife's school had a Canon for the sort of thing you have mentioned.
Their Ixus range have cameras for less than 100 quid, Nikon Coolpix are also available in your price range.

Sorry to go off topic but whats the difference to a childs safety if you take a picture on a phone or a camera??? Seems like common sense has gone out the window on this one!

b****r all, but I assume its to do with the ease of publishing it on social media.

None at all. I refrained from saying this earlier but many modern camera can send images directly to a phone and others can use WiFi SD cards so I don’t think there is a differerence in general. The specific cameras (and SD cards) would have to be certified & inspected to avoid this ... and then what about once they are on the computer? Better stick to Polaroids ... Oh wait ... scanning .... :$ :$ :$
