New camera,new user,new problems

Hi,just joined this forum and just purchased my first DSLR. A Cannon eos1000D.Dont know if anyone has any feedback on this camera as i did a bit of research with the little knowledge i had and this one seem to take my fancy.It is all a bit overwhelming trying to take all the information in but its early days and im hopeful i can take in a little at a time and maybe take some good pics.
 
you'll get there mate, i recently purchased a Nikon D90 and although i have been using a Canon 350d for a year i was still overwelmed with the vast amount of user settings etc that the D90 can handle.
Just take your time, play about as i do and you'll soon have a cracking portfolio that u are proud of.
 
Good luck with your new camera - I moved from a bridge to a Nikon D60 a couple of months ago and I'm still working things out and do quite a lot of this :thinking:

My advice is carry the manual with you and make sure you read it completely at least once. Otherwise just experiment, take lots of shots, see what works and what doesn't, write down what works... repeat. :thumbs:
 
Best advice I can give is to understand the coralation between ISO shutter speed and aperture, once you undderstand this everthing else falls into place. There are plenty of good books and online stuff to read,look in the tutorial section here, I am sure that you will find the answers you need in there. good luck and have fun, I look forward to seeing your photos.
 
That's a good starting point for a DSLR - how's it going so far? Any results :) ?
 
I have the same camera, you can see most of my photo's on my flickr account (see my signature). Although if I had the spare cash I would definitely upgrade to something in the higher range as I find it doesn't handle the high ISO range very well.

Looking forward to seeing your shots posted on talkphotography.

Just try to make haste slowly.
DSLR's are complex.

You can start with the camera on auto to get a few pics. Then I suggest you learn about Manual, Aperture priority and Shutter Priority.
Don't know if your model has Scene Modes, but if you get the hang of the 3 modes I mentioned you will not need Scene Modes.

My 2p worth is to make sure that you take every shot with a purpose. For example, what are you wanting to achieve and so, what settings do you need to accomplish this.

One tip I am finding very useful is to take multiple shots of the same subject but varying the aperture, ISO or shutter speed. In this way I can see (and learn about) the effects of these changes.

the beauty of digital is that you can take 500+ shots easily in one day and then spend time reviewing these and learning what the results were but also finding out what you like too.
