have you thought about looking into used? Thought about Nikon D90 and Canon 60D?

If you've already got the 1000D then I'm guessing you may have bought extra lenses? If so, you won't go far wrong with the 60D. It's a little above your budget, but would be worth it.

If you've only got the kit lens and don't mind starting again then the Nikon D7000 is probably the best crop dSLR in low light. Take a look at my Flickr...there is a shot on there called "Isaacs". It was taken using a D7000, handheld at ISO3200 and has only had basic noise reduction performed on it in Elements 10.

Only issue with the D7000 is that it's becoming a little hard to get hold of at the moment and prices have gone up in recent weeks (it's gone up by £150 since I got mine in early October).

I'd go with any of the canon if you want to do video

Really? I'm new to all this mullarkey and was told Nikon are better at video capture

The Sony SLT-A55 is excellent for video being the only one in your price range that can do proper phase-detect autofocus when recording video. It's also very good with high iso stills, but you should check it out to see if you're happy with the electronic viewfinder. However, if you've already committed to any lenses beyond the kit lens then it'd be more sensible to stick with Canon rather than sell it all and start again.

Agree that the Sony is a great piece of kit for the money , especially if video is a priority.
Great image quality also .

Of the cameras you mention I`d lean towards the D5100 .

The D5100 uses the same sensor. Both immense in low light.

If you don't want video look for the 50D or if you want to do video the 600D;)

Hi Richard

from the above options, as you are already a Canon user (and if you are happy with the Canon you already have) I would opt for the 550 / 600D. For the small amount extra (£50-75), I'd go for the 600D - it's a newer model and one of the new features it now has is the swivel LCD screen.

A good friend recently upgrdaded to the 60D and really likes it - this body only is only just outside your budget - could be worth saving that little extra for ...
