I'm currently using a pentax k100d which i bought second hand from dale photographic in leeds, while this has suited me fine, every now and then i find myself needing more from a camera, but as photography is only a hobby i see my money going else where :shake: so recently i have been looking at older cameras that i reckon should do the job, i am currently bidding on a nikon d1x on freebay without lenses, really just looking for some info on some good lenses that are a bit cheaper, i like doing portraits, but i could also do with a more day to day lens if you know what i mean  i have also been looking at getting a rb67 medium format which i have set some money aside for, so if someone knows some lenses that would be perfect i dont mind dipping into that money

also; im going skiing for three months next january, obviously taking a camera, so in the near future i will probably be looking at some landscape lenses if anyone has any recomendations?

cheers

Thom

I would have thought something like a pentax K10D would have been a better option, pretty cheap now, and certainly better than the d1X.

I have a D200 and have just bought a D1x as a second body. I am REALLY impressed by it. Alright it is just less than 6mpix but the photo quality is very good and it a professional quality body. Also lens etc that you get for it could then be used on another Nikon body later.

thats what im thinking, i have an olympus om10 and i love the feel of it, its so solid, i reckon that the d1x which is a pro slr must be pretty similar, and yeah if i spend a bit more on lenses i can keep them for future upgrades

You will also need to budget for a flash gun as the D1x is a pro body and as such does not have a built in flash. Jessops do a Nikon flash for £35 which would do fine to start with and you would then be able to use this too later.

yeah they look alright, would like a speedlight, but cant afford them =( might check dale photographics second hands

Re. flashguns, I don't have a TTL flash at all for my D40, I did on my Oly E-420, but now just use an old Vivtar flash that I picked up for 12 quid at a collectibles shop! It does the job fine, provided you're ok on how to set it up etc.

I have the D1x like I said plus SB600/800 but I am buying one of those flashes for my wife's D40x. If you like I will attach it to the D1x and let you know what it is like. I have taken some shots I am really happy with using the D1x and a nifty fifty it really is good. I am so impressed with the D1x that I am looking at selling the D200 and grip to get a D2x. I think it will be a few years before the D3x comes down to a nice price on the second hand market :) I want a D700x/D800 next and I can justify it now because I have decided to do a BA in photography :)

cheers for the info, anyone got any info on lenses re; origional question ha ha dont want to get done for off topic posts :p

You just need to be careful with buying older flashes where they were originally launched for film. Some of them create a voltage when fired of hundreds of volts which is fine on film cameras but NOT good on modern DSLRs and can kill them! There is a device you can buy to fit between the flash and the camera but they cost as much as the jessops flash gun so there would be no point. But if you can find one with a low flash voltage then that is a good cheap alternative.
