Hi all, I'm looking for some suggestions for a new nikon dslr. Having recently sold my d300 (now regretting that decision) I want to get another camera. I really liked the build quality, features and layout of the d300 so I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions. I mainly shoot landscapes and architecture type shots but I do try a bit of everything. Budget would be under £900

Hope you can help👍

If you want to stick with the same layout and build quality of the d300 the d700 is probably your best bet. If your lucky you may get a second hand one for £900 but then you would need to get a full frame lens if you don't already own one.
Sticking with dx body's there's the d7100 which comes close to budget without a lens new, or the d7000 which would give you just over 300 towards a lens. Both should give you a noticeable improvement in image quality and iso performance over the d300 but with a consumer controls layout.
If none of those options are suitable you could always look for another d300.

You could just bite your lip and go for a used D300s. At least you'll know you will like it. Mifsuds have one that will leave you £300 change out of your £900 budget.

Thanks for reply guys. Is the only difference on the d300s that you can video. No upgraded sensor , better Iso capabilities etc? I was thinking about the d7100. It would have to be a Dx nikon as I still have one Dx lens

Would recommend the 7100 but don't believe all the hype about the video side of the camera, its ok but just ok,just my opinion

Not interested in the video side of it. Is the iso capabilities much better on d7100 than the d300s. I noticed it was fairly poor on the d300 I had.

Not sure i never use high ISO really but its supposed to be very good I think for this priced camera

Pro's & cons of both models??

You can compare the D300 and D7100 sensor performance at www.dxomark.com. Looks like the D7100 scores best.
24 MP sensor on the D7100 gives you a bit of scope for cropping and retaining detail.

Even if you are not normally a high ISO user having good ISO performance leaves you the option, within reason, of sticking the camera on Auto ISO and picking what shutter speed / aperture you prefer without worrying about the ISO creeping up.

If you've only got one dx lens, then surely getting the d7000 and putting the other few hundred quid towards quality glass is the best bet.

The only way to get equal build quality and handling as your d300 is to get.... another d300!

I would be getting another lens with the camera. Just trying to decide which one would suit. D300s not worth the extra cash compared to a used d300? Would the better iso & sensor on the d7100 outway benefits of d300s build quality and features?

absolutely not

I have been waiting for Nikon to bring out a replacement for the the D300/s and it seems they won't be, so got a D7100 as it does have a similar build quality.
All the silly bits are hidden away so you only really have the basics on show, like the D300
High ISO handling is brilliant, on the D300 I wouldn't go above 800, but on the D7100 I have used 3200 and got good results

Thanks jan, so better than d7100??
No, I was referring to the difference between D300 and D300s.

I don't think, you can compare any of the D300's with the D7x00 series at all... totally different beasts.

Only played around with the D7000 and D7100, and in my hand they simply don't fit, as they are so small... :D

Image quality?... can easily live with all of them.

I have to say I much prefer the feel if the d300. Had a bit of a play with d7100 today and not too keen but the thing that was pointing towards the d7100 was the newer sensor and iso😳

Its a real shame Nikon didn't bring out the d400....but im over that now..:dummy:

To me looks like you have three options.

D7100
D300
D700

In the end I sold my d300 and d300s due to the poor iso performance. I loved those cameras so a d400 would have been amazing.

Don't like the toy like feel of the d7000/d7100 so decided to go full frame with the d700. Such an awesome camera. On the look out for another to keep it company.

What's your opinion on d300s compared d300. Worth the extra ££s?
