I am thinking of buying a DSLR camera this week but havent a clue which one to buy. I would like some advice as to what brands I should avoid, focus on (no pun intended!!), and generally some advice as to what I should be looking for. I have a budget of around £400 for a camera.

Thanks in advance
Antony

PS...going to Malaysia in two weeks so need to buy one quickly!

A Canon 400D is a good one to start off with. I've got one and it's more than capable of getting good results when used properly (that's the bit I'm working on :D ) You can pick a mint 2nd hand one up for a little over £200 at the moment, which will leave you something in the pot to get a lens or two as well. A 50mm 1.8 lens is a must and can be had for around £70 new.

Hi Ant and welcome,

All the major producers (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax etc) make very good entry level cameras. You can't beat going to you local camera shop and having a hold of them to see which suits you better. If it doesn't feel comfortable in the hand or you find the menus etc complicated then its probably not for you.
Its also worth looking in the classifieds on here as you can pick up really good deals for a lot less.

I had a Nikon d40 as my first camera it was great , if fact ive still got it

theres one for sale on here aswell i think

i bought a nikon d60 and yes its a great starter camera but you are VERY limited to which lenses you can upgrade to as the auto focus motor is in the lens not the body meaning you can only buy AF-S lenses and there aren't many, and the good ones are VERY expensive!

I'd reccomend a canon 400d having used 1 last night, but go into a local camera shop and hold/try a load. the nikon i have felt great in my hands, really comfortable, yet my brother (who uses it once a week probably) hates it compared to my canon 20d, yet i don't particularly like the feel of the 20!

thanks for all the info everyone...much appreciated...might just take a walk to a shop this lunchtime!!!
