I currently own a Canon 70d and a few lenses (also got an iPhone 16 pro), which for various reasons hasn’t seen the light of day for quite a while, mainly I don’t want to lug around my camera and a load of lenses! I don’t mind my phone but would prefer a proper camera…

I previously had a Fuji x100 which I loved, especially the images it produced, but felt a bit restricted by the fixed lens, but often miss it!

As I am getting back into my walking and cycling I plan to take a camera out with me more often. I can sell all my canon stuff (not for a lot probably!) and I have perhaps £1k budget to buy a camera that I hope will last me for quite some time…

I had briefly looked at Fuji, Leica etc and would appreciate any advice, recommendations as I realise technology has moved on considerably

Thanks for this . not really explored M43 previously. Olympus seem to be quite well regarded in this area.

I considered the Leica dlux 8 but have ruled that out, I liked the look of Fuji

The Fuji X100vi looks great but fixed lends again and it appears people have had some issues and there’s a fair few been put up for sale which is a concern!

I really don't understand why people go for these over the Panasonic cameras they are based on. To me Leica just don't do enough to justify the mark up but if people do see the appeal then good luck to them.

One MFT camera I'm a bit of a fan of is the GX80. This is an evf in the corner camera rather than an evf hump in the middle camera. They're getting old now but on the positive side they are quite small and they have a built in flash which you can pull back to get bounce with. I have one. You can find them for sale pretty easily. Might be worth a look. Another I have is the GX9 which is similar but with a higher mp count and a couple more manual controls and a tilting evf which I think does come in handy. Both also have tilting screens and are pretty much the same size as a Fuji X100.

Bob I was in the same situation as you a couple of years back. I was a Nikon fan, but weight made me think about MFT cameras and lenses,.so I part exchanged the lot. Everyone has their own ideas as to which make and model to get. For me it was Pansonic as a make of choice and the G9 camera, although not the smallest of MFT cameras the price was reasonable. Now well within your price budget new or used.
However the Panasonic G9ii although costing a little more is well worth going for (which I now own as well). Specs can be found on the interweb or on youtube so no point in putting them on here.
As I said I camera from a Nikon DSLR camera range and going over to Panasonic made me realise how out of date even my Nikon D810 was..
Many prefer the Olympus brand but as I have no hands on experience with that make I won't comment.
As your requirement are for a camera for walking and cycling, Like others I would suggest an MFT camera is the way to go. Lighter camera and lens weight and all MFT lenses are interchangable between makes ,so you not limited in that respect.

of course there are many things to consider apart from cost such as start up times - camera buffer amount- phase detection - battery life - image stablisation- dual card slots -to name but a few, which makes choosing the right camera more difficult

What sorts of photography are you going for? If you want a camera for cycling how about an olympus TG - meant to be very strong.

Just to update this thread too, I finally went for a MFT, an OM Systems OM-3 with a selection of 3 lenses.

I’m yet to get it out in the wild but think I’ll be happy with my purchase!
Which lenses have you got?

I’ve spent years shooting with zooms for general purpose because I’ve always been ‘afraid’ that I’ll miss a shot because I don’t have the right focal length, but over the past few weeks I’ve just been going out with a 35mm lens (Full frame) and I’ve found it liberating.

New OMS ( Olympus) 50-200 f2.8 to be announced in a few days . Looks good ??

What have you done with the @snerkler we used to know...... :ROFLMAO:

Just buy a used Barnack Leica and find peace with yourself.
