next question!! lol im currently using the canon 300d and theres 2 fellas are offering money for it! ive been thinking about upgrading to a 20d but i want to make sure it would be the best option! it is mainly used for motorsport and aviation events and some landscape shots (when we get half decent weather over here)! also is used for a few jobs like photographing new buildings and new cars, nothing major really.

should i go for the 20d/30d/350d/10d ?? i will probably stay with canon as my lenses are canon ones!

the cameras above are probably all i can scrape to afford! :thumb:

thanks again :thumb:

If you can afford to, I'd go for the 30d if only for the larger screen, it does make a difference. You can get good deals on the 30d, see the link in news forum. I'm sourcing one for my father-in-law at the moment, with a local shop I've given them the best prices I can find on tinterweb and told them to see what they can do, the deal is as follows:

30d - £829
10-22mm canon - £495 (£70 cashback can be claimed from 30d voucher - £425)
Battery Grip - £119
430ex Speedlite - £159
Genuine battery - £39
Total - £1641 all in :woot:

so far the guy says shouldn't be a problem, its just he couldn't get near the memory card price, which isn't an issue.

£17.99 + del. for sloths kingston 1GB CF card

I would leave the genuine battery and buy a copy for a fraction of the price ;)

Do a search for threads on here about it :)

30D is very nice, just been using bosses today which he got over the weekend. LCD is great compared to that on my 350D, but the more practical issues that impressed me was the larger view finder, spot metering, and the means to change ISO in increments. Was also surprised at how light it was, expected it to be about twice the weight it was.

If you can stretch to one, get the 30D - if I was looking for an upgrade/replacement for my 350D I would get that, however it various on whether you can stretch to it, you think you'll use it, and most of all whether you actually like it.

Same advice as most of us would give in these threads is find your local camera shop and handhold the ones your interested in, see how they function for you, what they feel like (in terms of weight and ergonomics).
Then decide which you want.

Personally I wouldnt go for the 20D or 10D unless you can get an absolute cut throat price because although its a great camera, it is also succeeded by the 30D. A 350D is a camera I like, but alot of people dont due to its small size which makes it uncomfortable for those used to more typical sized SLRs, and those with large hands.

Yes I've told him that but it was just out of curiosity, keeping all at genuines. Can get a compatible for £9.25.

Why is the LCD so important? if you 'fart about' looking at the screen after each shot who know what action you'll miss? just take the pictures I say and worry about the results later :)

Warspite has it, larger viewfinder and spot metering!

Woh steady there :hand: , I've not read enough on the 30d yet to know about the view finder too and 'cause I aint an expert, or have not used it I dont know about spot metering either. Thats why I didn't mention any of these. :innocent:

i find spot metering hugely useful, couldnt cope without it once i learnt what it was :)

it just takes a reading from the small area in the centre of the frame instead of evaulating the scene. very good for back lit shots or where you want to blow out the background on purpose etc, cant do without it in in surfing shots.

It wasn't aimed at you glenn, just a general 'gripe' about the way flashy technology seems to get more attention than useful features.

Maybe i can take a picture of this flashy 'Technology' for the comp!!:laugh1:

There's a guy (not me!) on the Canon Forum who says be guided by your own shooting style. If you're happy with the 300D but just want an upgrade, the 350D should suit, and it's a lot cheaper than the 30D. I bought one from Jacobs last week for £399 new - B stock, but then I was looking for something really small and light as a second body to go with my 5D. Like a 1.6 focal length factor doesn't quite make up for 2.5 times the price for a new 30D! On the other hand, if I already had a 10D I'd probably have gone for a 30D with its bigger screen, more pixies, and the same control layout.

Oh dear, consumer choice is difficult, isn't it? Maybe it's time to get the two birds in your hands and see which perches nicely?

Steve you have listed cameras from 3 different generations and are trying to compare them. Just to clarify

The 300D that you are currently using is from the same range as the 10D that you mentioned. The 10D was the 300d’s big brother and had several improvements, main ones being, all metal body, larger sensor, bigger buffer, higher frame rate and less noise at higher iso’s.

The 300D was replaced by the 350D as the 10D was replaced by the 20D. Again a similar upgrade pattern is visible, larger sensor, bigger buffer, faster frame rates and better noise. The 350D is still a plastic bodied camera and its size was smaller than the 300D it replaced. The improvement in picture quality could not be denied but some people find the 350D a little too small for the size of their hands. The 20D was also slightly smaller than the 10D but is regarded as a more useable size. Again similar improvements where made to the 20D over the 10D.

The 20D has now been joined by the very recently released 30D and is currently being phased out. Again the improvements/changed between the specs of the 20D/30D are well documented on this and many other websites.

That basically leaves you with a choice, if buying new, of a 350D, a 20D or a 30D but as you are looking to the summer then it all likelihood you will be down to two with 20D being all but history.

Does the 30D do anything that you feel you need and the 350D can’t?
If not then subject to the 350D feeling comfortable for you, (my best advice is to try before you buy, handle both to see how they feel), then any extra money you might save by buying the cheaper model could be put towards better/more glass which is where the real flexibility and quality is more likely to come from. As you will have seen Camera bodies are regularly updated and quickly become last years’ model, lenses on the other hand, if bought carefully will last you a lifetime.

i just upgraded from a 300d this week. i was all set on getting a 350d as it offered me all i needed, however i went for the 20d.

firstly, if i'd bought the 350d i would always have a feeling that 6 months down the line, i'd want to upgrade again. while i could have bought it and sold it on when i upgraded, i would still lose money.
and i got a great staff purchase price on a mint b stock kit. :)

i only wish that id bought the 20d when it first came out. i was offered one at a good price when it was released, but as i was just starting out in digital photography i bought an fz-20, partly because i thought th 20d would be more than i needed. i could have grown into it though and i found the fz-20 way to limiting after only a few months. you could feel the same about the 350 if you get that.
you want to upgrade the 300d so you must be finding it a bit limiting, otherwise theres no need to upgrade, the 350 doesnt really offer you that much more.
if i could do it again i would have bought the best i could afford at the time. would have saved me alot of money in the long run, probably enough for a nice new lens.

thanks men! ive a lot of thinking still to be done, my mate bought the 350d recently so im going to see if i caould borrow it for a day or 2! lol the deals on the 350d at the minute are tempting compared to the 20/30d but i will have to go think about it for a while!!

thanks again!
