After using a SLR Film Camera and a compact digital i've decided to splash out on an SLR Digital camera. I've always used Canon gear as it's served me well in the past.

I have around £500 or so to spend, any do's or dont's when it comes to digital SLR cameras.

I've been looking at the EOS 350D and 400D, does anyone use these, are they any good?

Thanks

You'll find them small in comaprison to an SLR Jason. If you have small hands then no worries though. You'd be better with the 400d over the 350d.

If you spent a little more you could get the 30d (shopping around of course). This would be more akin to a film slr in size and is a much more robust camera.

Hi there.

I love my 350D but having said that, the 400D wasn't around at the time. As the 350 will have dropped in price by now and has more megapixels, I think I'd still go for the 350D anyway. However....get a decent lens!! The kit lens is not that brilliant, though ok to start with if £'s are tight.

Others here will be better able to advise on lenses. Good luck with it!

Thanks, i think i'll pop along to a local camera shop for a look and feel of the cameras before i decide.

Thanks

I still have a Sigma 28-200 (if i remember rightly) lens that came with my EOS 300 Film Camera, i assume that the fit is the same.

It's not great, but it should do me for a while.

No problem.

The EOS all have EF mounts don't they? If so you're sigma will fit perfectly

Update..

I went for the EOS 400D after much humming and arring and chin rubbing. First impressions are it's a great camera and it's going to take me a while to read the destructions.

I can see what jonny means by it being smaller than my film SLR camera, i don't have huge hands so it's not a problem thankfully.

I can't wait to get out and start taking photographs again, the bug is well and truly back.

Congrats on the new camera... good choice. When funds permit you'll find that fitting a battery grip will vastly improve the handling of the camera, which is true of all none 1 Series cameras. :)

Congratulations - i've seen some great shots from that camera and i'm sure you'll be posting some soon.

:canon:

Thanks for all the help and advice Guys.

Jonnyreb, another Canonian. I think we will outnumber the competition soon :):)

:agree: with CT

I have had a 400D since it was launched and never had a problem with the size of it. I read a lot of posts about how good the battery grip is so I bought one last week. What a difference it makes  The camera feel so much more solid. Also, the buttons on the grip that allow you to use the camera in portrait mode are really useful. If you do decide to get one try AJ Purdy. I couldn't find anywhere on the interweb cheaper and their service was excellent

So you weren't tempted over to the dark side then !!!! :D
