No
Well people, I have sold my Panasonic, and am ready to buy something new.

Want to get something that will keep me going for a while, dont want to spend big money tho. Im poor, LOL.

Was thinking the Canon eOS 350D

What do you think? Something to get to grips with, and get used to all these stange things like ISO and F, and stuff, haha

Certainly a good starting point and will be more than capable of producing quality images.

You can get yourself some bargains for used equipment on Ebay considering that the 400D is now out as well.

For the extra £30-50 I would go for the 400d, unless you can get an absolute steal on a 350d. HTH.;)

I proberbly would avoid the ebay route, unless you go with the tried and VERY trusted Kerso, who deals both on and off ebay, everyone on here has ordered something or other from him, he's very competetive with pricing. Or go the well known shop/internet route.

Thanks people, what kinda cost am I looking at? What is the advantages of the 400 over the 350? Sorry for the questions, want to make sure before i splash out.

Not quite sure of the going rate..will have a look.

Main advantages are:

400 v's 350

10.1 - 8.2 megapix
Larger 2.5" screen on the 400d
It also has an anti dust sensor vibration thingy, that helps to keep the sensor clean from dust which you will, no matter how hard you try get when you change between lenses.

In a nutshell they are the main points, I've had my 350 for over a year now and love it to bits, but if i had my time again, I would beg/steal the bit extra and go for the 400.

Will post up some prices in a mo.

I have the 400D and I have to say the extra screen size alone is worth it's weight in gold!

OK im looking at the 400D now, for sure, haha, 350D what that???? hehehe.

Heres a basic run down of prices for various cameras from various retailers, alternatively theres a member on here selling new called StuvUK See link for details of his latest offer :)

warehouse express - £490 inc lens
jessops - £499 inc lens

Looks like a few places have got the price at just below £500 for the kit.

It works out at about £50 on average cheaper if you go for the 350d, so its a no brainer really.

Depending on you cash and budget you could either go with someone like warehouse/jessops and take advantage of any buy now pay laters.

Or have a scout around here to see if anyone knows of any voucher money off promos with it coming up to xmas.

Or go into high street jessops/jaccobs/LCE and ask them straight out whats your best deal for cash.

Or finally contact someone like Kerso and ask how much he can get one for.

:)

Last minute breaker-
discount codes for jessops online.....

Wow, thanks for you help I can do £500 without too much hassel. I think I should get myself a fairly good cam for that then, with the 400D. And as i get birthdays, etc, can build up a collection of lenses.

If you get hold of StuvUK in these Forums he can get you a 400D Kit for under £500 (got someone a 350D from him recently & highly recommend him to you) - Check out our Trading Forum for threads from him & make your own mind up ... Paul

The only other stumbling block will be the memory card, I would have a quick look in the suppliers thread as there are a few about places to get your CF memory cards from. Unless they bung you a card dirt cheap (less than £35 ish for a sans disk III 1GB) or for free as part of the deal have a look here, as you may find they'll try it on and get you to spend £50-80 on a card you may get for less than £30. Last place I used was mymemory worked out to be £35 inc del for a 1GB sans III. But have a scout round as loads of places do good cheap cards.;)

Here you go I've got 2 of these and think their great, as they kinda fall in between the mega fast new cards and the cheaper II's you can get, all down to personal prefs though. £27.99 + £3.95 delivery - £31.94 all in. I think its better to have a few smaller cards than one with more storage (all eggs in one basket) you never know??

Thats a dam good point, I forgot all about the card. Right so CF is the way to go. Like the idea of a couple of smaller ones.

I will contact the gezzer, on here and see if he can do somethign for me on a 400. Will also go into town and use a shop to have a handle and a play with one :)

EDIT..

Sent StuvUK a message :)

To be fair to Joe, I would have a look at the (darkside of the force too) only joking, definatley go and see the various models and makes on offer for your price tag, also good to see in the flesh/handle them so to speak. I would stick with Canon or Nikon though ;) best of the bunch.

To true, but when I was looking round at all brands before getting the 350, 9/10 mags put either nikon or canon in the top 2 spots every time. So thats why I would plump for either of them.

The 400D also has better AF than the 350D as it uses the same system as in the 30D.

When buying a camera, at least from Canon, the manufacturer's warranty is only valid if you buy a European model. This is not a problem with stuv but will apply if bought from a Hong Kong dealer. I also think will apply if you buy from Kerso, though from everything I have read about him he will look after you and deal with any problems. Incidentally this does not apply to lenses which have a worldwide warranty.

For memory cards unless you intend on shooting in extreme climates the Ultra II would be fine as the camera will not be able to write fast enough to take advantage of the extra speed of the Extreme series, though if the difference in price is so small then you might as well get the better ones.

Personally I find emartbuy to be the cheapest for Sandisk cards, though if price is a concern there are many people who have happily used generic brand cards with no problems. Unless you are going to be doing any rapid fire shooting the card speed is not something that you will only notice when downloading to PC.

Michael.

Sounds advice my friend. Im wary of buying off Ebay, so will stick to shop or the geeza off here. I will wonder into Jessops tomorrow, and see what they offer. Also get to have a fiddle and see what she feels like in my hand. oo er

EDIT..
Oh what lens do you get with the 400D? What are its limitations? Is it a good starting point? Cheers.

If you're interested in buying body only then I'll looking to sell the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my 30D. PM me if you're interested and I'll hold off on sticking it up for sale for a few days. :D

Hey,
Sorry no idea how to reply to your PT, haha. I will go looking tomorrow and see what prices i can find, and I will let you know :)

Woohoo, love the idea of something else to confuse, haha.

Right, ive used ukdvdr before so will have a look :)

Might order one of them in prep

Better figure out what camera you want first!!!!

Canon use cf and I think most Nikons use sd cards.

I'm sure someone will jump on this if i am wrong though.

Well update time people. I have been in Jessops for 2 hours today. And well I got a deal I could not say no to. What do you think?

Canon 400D with lens Kit
2Gb Scandisk Ultra CF Card
Canon Carry Case
3 year Insurance
And a Canon Key Ring (I know, I know)

Total = £469.00 Wayhay :)

I'd say you did very well  maybe you could pass on some tips on how you did so well although I'm sure you'd rather not :embarrassed:
Paul ;)

hehe,
Well I did the usual, trick, look around the web, get the best price I could find. Then the trick is to make it very clear you want to buy now, but only if the price is right, one thing ive noticed with high street shops, is that they cannot do much with the price, but they can add extras, to sweeten the deal. Had a play in the shop, took some pictures, made sure they knew this was the cam for me. Did the im going for a coffee to think about it, and left them for half an hour. Back in with plenty of confidence and really push them, that you want to buy from them. it is surprising what the store manager can do. If they want, too.
