New Budding Photographer - Help required

Hi everyone,

I have made the decision to start shooting as a job in the future once my 6 month old twins are of an age that I can do this. I need to do some worthwhile courses to be able to learn to shoot indoors and outdoors successfully using distance photography/reportage style with a view to shoot at parties/events/maybe weddings. I have the creative ability but not quite there with the autopilot controlling of my camera yet.

If anyone has any course recommendations, which may not be cheap but will allow me to learn a lot over a weekend, for example, that would be great, then I can get moving. Also which long distance lens to buy for unobtrusive photography, which will go with my Canon 400D.

Any help much appreciated.

Funny how people enjoy not being so positive - is it that you've been stung by photography or that it's January and everyone's in a mood?
 
how have you interpreted a welcome as being in a mood? and pointing out you have a steep learning curve ahead which is true.:thinking:
 
Photography does have a learning curve, some find it steep, others don't.

Above all it should be enjoyable.

I started out with a 300D, and in the past month have just upgraded to a 40D, i'd like to go into pet photography but I still have a hell of a lot to learn, try seeing if there is a camera club near you.
Also read understanding exposure it really helped me, if you have friends having weddings then get snap happy!
I have a 2 yr old and 5 yr old at home, so am using the next year to learn as much as possible.

Plenty of tutorials to get your teeth in to. There are a few to view free, but many of the freeview stuff is what Mark made for lastolite.

Also for free tutorials, try Adorama tv, learnmyshot.com, Bryan Peterson on youtube, Gavtrain (Gavin Hoey). Photo Answers... alot of free stuff to get your brain soaked with stuff.

Thanks everyone that is really useful. I've been snapping weddings and parties for a while now and agreed, a steep learning curve is inevitable...was just looking for more info than I have a steep learning curve and I got it from many - thanks a lot. I shall use the links you sent me and have a look at the tutorials in the meantime. If anyone has any lens recommendations, that would be good too. Cheers ;)
 
Not a course, but beg, steal or borrow (buy is an option too) a copy of "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. You will find it useful.

Another good way to learn is to post some shots up for comments.

Stick your lens query in the Equipment section with budget, requirements etc and you'll get lots of answers
