I have a Canon 450D and am looking at upgrading. I appreciate that the lenses are a factor in the focusing, but I have upgraded my lenses and still not happy with the focus. Upon searching on the internet, this doesn't seem to be an isolated problem with the 450.

I have only just started looking and the 550D, 7D and 60D have caught my eye.

Or do I really push the boat out and go to the full frame 5D (although not sure if I can go that far)? :thinking: I also only have 2 x EF-S lenses (15-85, 50 f/1.8).

There is quite a bit of difference in the price, but I am looking for Image Quality, and do not want to buy something cheaper and still not be happy with it. Photography is only a hobby for me, and I still consider myself as a beginner.

Any recommendations and ideas welcomed!

the 450D is a perfectly good camera for focusing, i would focus on the lenses you have as the issue, the 50mm 1.8 is renouned for hunting in low light situations, and it is afterall a sub £100 lens, not excatly the top budget, if your wanting much faster focus i would look into the canon L series of lenses before a body upgrade as the lenses you have will show weaknesses before the 450d
 
Canon L series lenses are all designed for full frame cameras and might not be the best options for the op.

OP, what exectly is the problem with the focus? Could you try and describe what problems you are having?
 
I think that it's best to judge each lens individually rather than to get a bit star struck by the magic L. Canon make some good lenses and they sell some lenses that were designed years ago which can't compete with the focus and USM type systems fitted to more modern lenses made by themselves and others.
 
Mmm food for thought. I will try and find someone with a decent lens and see, although I thought the 15-85 and 50mm should give a better quality than they do.

I have tried auto-focussing the 50 at 1.8 and know the focus is slightly out, and the 15-85 is a softer focus around the edges when doing a test with the same aperture and setting with both the lenses.

It is disheartening, so I will try every option suggested before making any rash decisions... Thanks
 
What focal lengths do you require? Maybe once you know, peeps may be able to make some recommendations?

I don't want to buy any more lenses yet, as I want to make sure the camera is ok first. Even the part of the photo that is in focus is not sharp.

Surely I can expect better even from an entry level DSLR and the step up from kit lenses.

Have a look at my flickr pictures, although I do not put these on at full size and they have all been sharpened.

Believe me, if you are not happy with AF (like I was) you will have to go all the way to the 1-series (or the new 7D). 1D mkIII is relatively affordable now, and so is 1ds mkii, or 1d mkiin if you are on a budget. No xxD was even remotely close to the 1D focusing.
