Ok so my beautiful other half has said I can have a new body for Xmas (depending how much it is) but I'm not sure what to go for.

At the moment I have a 1000D, I get along with it but the ISO is very noisy if I push it more then 400!

Been looking at the 60D and it looks rather sexy, does anyone have one? If so how do you find it? Also is it full frame?

Noise isnt going to be a whole lot better, 60D is crop sensor.
 
I've just gone from a 1000D to a 60D and it's fantastic. Much better at higher ISO and the faster FPS is great when I'm trying to capture my dogs, and as it's a good bit bigger the handling is a lot better, I couldn't recommend it enough.
It's not full frame though, but I couldn't afford that upgrade :lol:

Lol I have fallen in love with photography, when I was younger I always wanted a dslr but never got one in my Xmas stocking :-( so now I'm making up for it.

Although I have had to agree to buy her a Chihuahua in return lol

Thanks I did want something a bit bigger so I got my 1000D gripped but then I found that I just don't like the build quality of it. The 60D does look rather nice so think that might be my choice.
 
A lot seems to be made about the fact the 60D is plastic but it still feels a world away from holding my 1000D. I reckon it'll actually be an advantage when I'm holding it all day at MTB events.

Not true, the noise of the 60d is FAR better than the 1000d.

The 60d is very useable as high as 3200 iso.

exactly. all crop camera's are nearly identical noise wise. only full frames are "far" better for noise reduction.

my 400d is usable at 1600. sometimes at 3200 depending on the subject

To my knowledge the 400D doesn't go above 1600 :shrug:

I understand that, but to me hi iso is 1600 on crop, also depends on what the OP considers hi iso, his post talks about 400 iso so I aimed a bit lower than 3200. If he has a problem with noise at 400, 3200 will be unacceptable.

Yeah I know what you mean. I will do next time I go in to town Il pop in to jessops and have a fiddle.

Correct, the 400d only goes to 1600. A lot if BS in this thread...

Thus not true 3200, it's a hack.
 
No like I said it's not "true" iso 3200. It's an algorithm which makes iso 1600 a bit more sensitive. It's no where near as high as 3200.
 
If iq at higher ISO is a factor get a 5d classic. I have one and a 50d and its so much better for noise handing and overall image quality than the 50

It depends what you consider poor really. Yeah it ain't amazing but you cam check composition and the histogram and any clipping. I wish it were as good as the one on the 50d but it is good enough for what I need and then the quality speaks for itself when you put the pics on the computer. So much better that I've considered selling my 50d for a second 5d but I think I'm going to save for a 5d2 to go with it

If I'm honest I ain't got a clue on how to read a histogram.

Ho much do the 5d classics go for?
 
Just been looking on eBay and now its got me thinking about getting one of them. I'm a little worried about the screen though. Is it as bad as the 1000D screen as I think the screen on my 1000D is poor
 
The screens are about the same. One thing to consider is the cameras with a serial number starting with 2 it higher have a slightly better screen than the earlier ones which have a bit of a colour cast to them. I assure you once you use a full frame camera you will find crops lacking in the iq department. You just need to work out how important the screen is to you. If you shoot in raw then you only need to worry about exposure and composition which the screen will do adequately.

It's not to important as I will just be happy with the step up to FF. I would also like to shoot tethered.

It's really got me thinking now as FF really is appealing to me
 
If it was me and I didn't need a second body, I would sell the 1000d closer to the "upgrade time" and start saving some of my own cash towards the prezzie and get the body I really REALLY wanted (Pro body all the way). :D

I'm also guessing theres going to be a couple of new DLSR's announced between now and christmas so the 7d, 5d and 1d mk4 could be within your new budget by then!

Sorry but you are wrong. The 60D handles noise extremely well and provides very useable images at the higher ISO settings.
I am more than happy to work at 800 when needed and have also shot at 1600 with more than acceptable results.
To the OP. I have had my 60D since April and love it. Don't be put off by some who post here. If you speak to 60D owners I think you will find that most are extremely happy with their purchase :).
On a side note, make sure you get some decent glass to get the most out of any body you decide on.
