New beginning?

After 5 years I've sold my 400D (my first digital SLR) together with kit lens and the Sigma 70-300mm. For now I have held onto the Canon f1.8 50mm and the Sigma 17-70mm as they are my favourite lenses. The idea was to upgrade to a 600D but I'm now seriously considering changing to a Nikon D5100. I will have no problem selling the lenses if necessary.
I would welcome objective views, advice, comment.

40D........such amazing value now, much better controls/handling, then start upgrading your lenses, i.e a 70-200mm is a nice addition/swap for the Sigma (which is leagues below).

No idea about Nikon but get the impression everything is more expensive on that 'dark' side.
