need to buy new mattress...

is Ikea a good place to get one ?
or where should I look for one ?
lets say budget is £200..is that enough ?

We got a really good foam mattress for £300 from Dreams, better than the expensive pocket spring mattresses we had before.


IKEA mattresses are great, made by silent night and really good value, but my choice would be foam from Dreams. 5 year sold and shows no sign of wear at all.

Money is not important with a mattress, (IMHO) it was what gives you a good night sleep that is important. Lets be honest for most of us it where we spend the most amount of time (whether we sleep for 3 or 10 hours)

Doesn't always follow that you get a better nights sleep on an expensive mattress either, it is what works for you.
 
My matress cost more than the bed and other bedroom furniture put together but it is great to sleep on.

By the way watch out if buying a mattress/bed from IKEA, they are different sizes to that used in the UK
 
So £200 might not be enough.ok.
As for places, Dreams, Ikea...any other?


Mattress we have now is from Ikea.As we have no receipt for it, there is no warranty on it :(
So need to find new one....

Like a lot of things, too many contributing factors as to how comfortable or how long different makes of mattress`s will last you.
 
We were given some money for a mattress as a wedding present 6 1/2 years ago and spent most of an afternoon traipsing around all the bed shops in town testing mattresses. Ended up spending quite a lot more than £200 on a multi layered memory foam one which is still going strong (and came with a 10 year guarantee). Can't remember which shop it came from though - as I said, we checked them all out!

I'm of the belief that there are a couple of things worth spending as much as it costs to get right - a mattress and shoes - if you're not in one, you're in the other, so get the most comfortable of each you can afford!

Ordered a memory foam mattress from them about 10 years ago and then another earlier this year when we moved to a new property (nothing wrong with the old one, that's on our spare bed..... let's say it had too many of my "memories" for my wife's liking :lol: )

These things are seriously comfortable! We picked up a 10" Kingsize for £330.

The prices are a little over your budget but they're a great investment :)
 
And bear in mind that wherever you go (Dreams, Bensons etc...) chances are the mattresses in each are exactly the same; manufactured by the same people, given different names (The Elm pocket-spring spine-cracker, or some such...) and prices will vary massively for the same thing from store to store.

And if you lie on them in store, remember to use sufficient pillows to replicate how your head would be at home.

Great advice, but, really, until you get the mattress home and have slept on it for about a week you're not going to know it suits you or not are you? Lying flat on your back fully clothed on one in a shop for 2 minutes with a sales person wittering on at you just aint going to cut it for testing one is it.

If you are buying a mattress/bed for two of you, I reckon you won't go far wrong getting one of those thats like two 3' mattresses pushed together. Then when the wife/husband/whoever is tossing and turning you are unaffected as much.

And they say women are the weaker sex don't they? Have you ever tried pulling the duvet back over to your side?!
 
Incidentally, Dreams do a return / replace deal if you really don't get on with the new mattress.

I'm 18 stone and the mattresses in the past have had to be replaced after about 4 years due to the hollow my mass created. (pocket sprung, non pocket sprung etc.)

I stay in lots of hotels which talk about pocket sprung with x number of springs and our foam mattress beats them all.
 
Is a foam mattress not, how shall we say, a bit sweaty though? At least with springs you know theres air in the middle to ease things a bit?

I get very hot in the night but don't find it any worse than a "normal" mattress. A lot may depend on the covering, Care & Comfort use a "coolmax" covering which seems to do what it says on the tin :lol:
 
Ours is multi layered and has loads of air channels built in to keep us cool. I "run warm" and even when I was ill and had very poor temperature regulation, I was far less sweaty on ours than elsewhere. We use a mattress protector too which may help a bit.
 
I get hot, but I think it is more to having a dormer house (Was hot before the foam mattress). My wife on the other hand never seems to get hot.

I prefere mattress that is harder.
Spring one we have gets 'soft' on my side and we have to turn it quite often.it stays ok on her side
 
Bear in mind if you are buying just a mattress a ikea mattress's are European sizes and will not fit a standard UK bed frame. Which magazine had a review of memory foam mattress's a few months back and Silent Night 3 zone mattress was a best buy and half the prices of the other best buys. You can pick them up for as little as £110 on Amazon.

As first time users of memory foam we were amazed how comfortable they were and how one person moving didn't affect the other. Quite difficult to bounce on though. And it took a couple of weeks for the chemical smell to completely disappear.

I think we went to one of the sheds (Dreams) first to bounce up and down on a few beds and then got a similar spec from Snug Mattress. They manufacture the things and at the time it all worked out much better value than the big name retailers (we found Dreams at the time very expensive).

PMSL!!!

When my niece & nephew visit they always try and con a trip up to the bedrooms for a cheeky bounce on the beds..... they are always really disappointed! There's no bounce at all with memory foam :lol:

It can feel very firm at first but that's because you're comparing it to a "normal" mattress that has instant give.

When my wife and I started seeing each other she found the mattress a little bit weird to get used to but apparently it's now turned her into a bed snob :lol:

There's about 6st difference between us and I can toss & turn 'til my heart's content and I haven't managed to bounce her out the bed yet :lol:

:lol: Haven't tried from the wardrobe but I suspect it would still be a thunk rather than a boing :D

But if you stick to reading a good book in bed and not getting up to any shenanigans, it's fine :thumbs:

It really is a minefield trying to choose a new mattress; so many choices with there being very small differences between the majority of them. Thankfully, when we went looking the other weekend, the salesman in the store (Sears), was pretty honest with his selections of mattress we should try. After a long chat with what we required, pocket-coil, Euro-top, memory foam, he showed us 2 mattresses, talked the spiel, and then left us alone to try them out. Didn't try and push the sale, or hassle, or hang around. When we were finished he wandered back over and chatted some more.

Going back for the sleep-set this week; $1600.00, for a king mattress & base, complete with 1300 pocket coils, 1 1/2" High Density Foam 1/2" Three Zone BluTek Gel Visco Memory Foam, 1/2" Three Zone Latex, 2" Firm HD Foam, Flexatron Support Pad, entire assembly is 20" thick. Looking forward to a good nights sleep!!

I realise I haven't helped that much as I'm across the Pond and the mattress are different, but you should really spend the most you can on a good mattress. We started off looking at below $1000.00 and quickly realised it would have been like sleeping on a duvet cover. Don't skimp as you'll regret it!

Makes you wonder how cavemen and early humans ever survived to modern day doesnt it with all this gubbins we now supposedly need to be able to sleep!

I blame marketing I tell ya.
 
It certainly is a complicated science buying a comfortable mattress, and marketing has taken over, pretty much like 98% of products we buy today. And as we get older, it does pay to spend a little extra to be comfortable.

it is a superb mattress and was delivered quickly and has the cool blue top layer

having just bought a memory foam from Dreams I can honestly say that if you are a hot bod it may not be one for you. After four nights of feeling like I was sleeping on a radiator I gave up and at 1:30am swapped my old mattress back (thank god I kept it) then had to wait the 30 days before I could swap the memory foam for a more expensive pocket spring.

Memory foam was comfy but just far too hot for me, almost made me feel ill and my work colleagues suffered due to my lack of sleep :D

I'm now sleeping like a baby on my orthopaedic mattress. Don't forget though that if you do take advantage of the comfort swap with Dreams they sting you for another delivery charge!
