New BBC HD channels

Got BBC3 already but no sign of BBC4 I suspect for a long time up here.

/edit on freeview

Hi Hugh

I'm getting BBC4 HD on Freesat channel 148 when I retuned earlier tonight in IV2. Don't know how other boxes might work though.

Peter

Aye, sorry I should have said I have freeview only.

BBC4 is one of the few channels I do watch any more. I started to watch something earlier in the week and the announcer said "also available in HD on channel 106". Quick - no channel 106. Retune - still no channel 106. Check on the net - BBC4 HD available on 106 from July 2014.

Got BBC4 HD on 106 and BBC3 HD on 105 freeview in Midlands. I'm checking FreeSat now.

BBC3HD and BBC4HD are on FreeSat on channels 147 & 148 .

I'm not really sure why I would want BBC3 in HD, anyone else thinking the same. I'm all for progress, but as a channel it doesn't strike me as needing additional details

EastEnders is bad enough in SD.

Yea, I now have 9 HD channels on freeview and not paying a penny. :)

Get rid of some of the shopping and all the Adult channels and there be room for even more HD on freeview

Heads up.

Monday will see the demise of BBC3 from the airwaves. Moves to online only.

Yes heard they were - wasn't sure when, shame as they've a few good programmes on.

Believe the "red button" is going as well ...

Sad that BBC3 is off, some good things on there, can't see how it'll change the cost to the Beeb personally but there you go

I think it's bizarre that BBC broadcast anything that isn't HD.

Main BBC1 channel isn't HD as they'd need about 20 HD channels to handle all the regional variants they are legally obliged to provide, (which are all lurking around channel 980+ on the sky box and one gets mapped to 101 when it's set up. I can see no benefit to Points West (other BBC local new programs are available) being broadcast in HD.

On the Freesat box, 101 is BBC1 non-HD but 106 is BBC1HD. Bit of a pain if it goes to the local news - just get a redded out video and annoying music. On Freeview, 1 is plain BBC1 and 101 is HD.

Oh I never thought of that. Though I would have thought the BBC was still capturing (and probably storing) in HD if only because it must be hard to buy SD kit now. I don't believe I've ever had the pleasure of watching Points West but I can't see how dropping half the pixels would improve it :)

On Sky/Virgin there's like a modern test card that just says "BBC HD is not available in your area at the moment". It's hilarious because it gives no clues that it will be available in all areas after 7pm....
