my bag broke yesterday - not complaining though... i've had it about 3 years and it's been carried miles - it's got room for everything i carry but perhaps being an over shoulder bag it does get a bit awkward on long walks.

so maybe a backpack might be a better idea?

as you can see, i carry my camera with attached lens, flash, remote triggers, on the lid i have attached a little wallet for my memory cards and a bigger pocket for my cleaning stuff.

i don't need a bag to carry additional lenses - i have another bag for those but i would like my main bag - like this one - to be able to accommodate my 5D3 with potentially a 70-200 2.8 attached.

i'd like a bag with a bit more room than this one if possible, i can fit my flashbender in the top, but it's a bit of a squeeze and i can't fit my brolly inside, so it would be nice if i could.

any suggestions for a good rugged backpack that could fit all this in?

budget would be £100-150.

Any ideas?

Hi Mark. Ive recently been spending a lot of time looking for the right backpack. My kit is a lot smaller - Oly OMD with a 3 zooms (Oly 9-18, Pana 12-35 and 35-100 2.8's; and 2 primes - Oly 45 and Pana 20).

I initially bought a shoulder bag - the think tank retrospective 5. A great, small shoulder bag. It would struggle to fit all my lenses comfortably, but i would rarely want all the lenses at once.

For going on longer walks i prefer a backpack, to keep both arms free. The backpacks i was looking at were
  • fstop which are only available online to me, good reputation but expensive)
  • the newer lowepro's, had a look in the local camera shop but none that really seemed right for me
  • Kata minibee. Looked nice, but again, only available online to me, and expensive

I settled on a 'normal' backpack. I found one that was very comfortable and had quite a few external pockets. Most importantly the main pocket has a side entry, meaning i could more easily access my camera gear.

Thank you to Simonkit for pointing me to the Lowepro Airzone. I went for the Airzone Pro 35-45 for £90.

My shoulder bag can fit in quite comfortably. Your kit will need some sort of camera bag insert to fit. The advantages to this backpack is that it is a lot cheaper than the fstop's and kata backpacks, it is very comortable for the weights i will be carrying.

I use a lowepro mini trekker aw, had it a few years now and I can fit everything in there and also put a mono pod on the side and a tripod on the front, it also has a pull out weather shield, ive carried it up Snowdon in the rain and it sealed my stuff perfectly, its also very comfortable,

I also you a over shoulder bag similer to the one you already have made by tarmac which is very good should I wish to only take a few bits and bobs with me

lowepro mini trekker aw,great bag,I fit a sigma 120-400mm lens,Sony 70-300/50-200/18-70 and a 50mm in mine plus a gripped body and a spare body!

It has a nice size front pocket for a jacket, lunch and keys and the weather cover is a saviour if you get caught out.

I would highly recommend it to anyone

Hi

I have this one here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lowepro-Nov...TF8&qid=1379179362&sr=8-3&keywords=camera+bag

It's only really suitable for carrying a DSLR attached with a small lens. I can fit my Nikon D300 with 18-70 lens in there.

Only complaint is that the water proof hood is a bit annoying to put up. When it started to rain, I had no clue what to do with it xD.

I do want to get a bigger bag now though so will be interesting to see what gets put forwards in this thread :).

If you want something stylish and customised, try a Porteen Gear bag, use google. I'm looking at getting one from them, well made, you choose the materials you want and the reviews all seem great.

Just like to say thanks for all the suggestions - after much pondering i ended up with a Lowepro Flipside 400AW

about £95 from Wilkinson Camera - it's actually, really, really comfortable - you almost forget you're wearing it - it even accommodates my popup reflector which i always had to carry separately. well recommended.

looks a very nice bag, what sort of room does it have inside for lenses/flashes etc?

I don't know if Lowe Pro still make this but I got mine for £50 on ebay and they usually go for 75 or so:

Lowe pro Compurover aw. You can get the rover AW without the computer compartment if need be, It can be dedicated camera or you can instert a cover over the camera area and have a sizable rucksack area too.

It depends where I am going but it is so flexible I can use it for almost anything - be it day trips in cities - trips to the park, or events or short breaks.

I can fit a 7d with the 300 F4 (bit bigger than the 70-200 2.8) length ways across the bottom or with the 70-200 F4 lens down (without the divider) plus also carrying flash, 24-105 and 16-35 f2.8. Then you have a few extra pockets and pouches for filters etc.

Brilliant ruckack imho.

I don't have a photo with me, but inside i have:

1 x canon 5d with 135/2 attached - there is easily space for a 70-200 2.8 attached without taking anything out.

1 x 430 ii flash

2 x triggers 1 x stofen diffuser

1 x lastolite brolly

cleaning cloth, memory cards, bounce card, grey card

and there is still space inside for more.

the main thing is that it distributes the weight pretty evenly so you don't get that ache on your shoulders after a while.
