Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to photography (doing it at A-level at the minute) but would like to carry on with it after i leave education, was just wondering if you had any tips or advice on what equipment to go for? Or should i stick with just my camera at the minute? I'm really interested in sport and quite like portraits if that's any help.

Thanks.

Stick with what you have for the moment, the 1000d is a capable camera. What lenses do you have?

You have said you like portraits, do you have the 50mmF1.8? One of the cheapest lenses canon make, but its very sharp! I bought one and love it!

I just have the 18-55mm standard kit lens at the minute.

Stick with what you have and if and when you can afford it, add a Canon 55-25 IS lens if need more reach.
The kit lens is fine for portraits, landscapes etc.
Rome wasn't build in a day :)

Yea, I agree... I guess you can just stick with the kit lens at the moment.
If you need a ''better'' lens after you leave education, I would suggest you to get a 17-40L, it is perfect for general use but that causes you a lot:D

I am going to echo the above comments, however if you find that you need a bit more reach then i would suggest that you look in to something like the 17-85. These can be had for under £200 and i have seen some go for as little as £130! Its a great little lens some will say its slow (F4 is its widest) but its got stablisation which really does help in low light.

You can get a 55-250 IS for that sort of money which (by all accounts) is a cracker for the price.

Certainly, when I started out, my second purchase after the camera/kit lens was a longer zoom (although I talked myself into a 70-200 F4L ;))
