Hi,

Been recomended to come onto this website by a friend from another message board.

Just turned 18 and want to get a digital Camera with the money I received. And thats all i know.

I will use the camera for taking pictures when watching Norwich City FC play  take pictures on holiday, with family, speical occasions(weddings etc) and just out with mates.
What do i need? DSLR / P&S(point and shoot)
I'd have to buy a DSLR 2nd/3rd hand if thats the option to go for due to limited funds and i wouldn't be able to get and kind of 'super' lens.

Any advice is better than no advice at this moment.

Thanks IAAB

Hi Lewis.

Have you any other photography experience? A DSLR is a great tool, but it takes time and effort to learn how to use it, not to mention money.

You may find a bridge camera suits your needs better, this is a like compact point and shoot, but with bigger and more features like super zooms and the like. Maybe get down to a shop and try out some different types and see what you like best.

so something like this?

What sort of budget are you looking at and do you have any photographic experience?
As Tom said, a bridge camera may be the best option for you. This would give you something fairly compact often with a telephoto lens, and it would give you the point and shoot modes as well as some of the manual modes you'd find on an SLR.

I have about as much exp as turning on my dads sony alpha 200 on auto and just snapping away to my hearts content Lol.
Im not looking any further than £150 ideally, the fuji fits that range, but if can get something alot better for not alot more i could probably stretch.

I'm not familiar with Fuji models myself, but it looks like the right sort of thing. On paper it has all the right features, but I can't find many reviews on it.

You aren't going to get dynamic footy pictures with a P&S, on a DSLR you would be needing a 300mm lens at least, and so talking probably more than your budget, so as recommended a bridge camera may be your best option.

hi

have a look at panasonic fz38 or 45 which is a bridge camera and has wonderful reviews.there is an offer going on at dixons .

now looking for a DSLR with an extra lens 50-200/50-300/70-200/70-300 for £300

Would have thought something like panasonic TZ10 might suit you as a first camera. small enough to sit in your pocket when wandering about but a reasonably decent zoom on for trying to get closer in to "stuff" as and when. (Ive got one as well as a DSLR)

177 5 star reviews out of 250. Have a read through some of them.

Its £30 over budget on amazon though...

Good luck.

p.s. At least you won't have to worry about taking photos of goals with supporting the canaries! ;)

FUji HS10 or HS20 - more zoom than you can shake a stick at for the footy. Fixed lens so they won't accuse you of being a pro whilst your there and getting kicked out(same with concerts). HD Video. Flip out screen. Great Macro mode. All the fancy whistles and bells you could ask for, without having to swap lenses. All the auto modes you could want to take great shots. Oooh, and it has slo mo video too...

There was a HS10 in the classifieds on here for £200, pretty much brand new, but you'll need 100 posts to view that.

i have a 7 month old sony a390 for sale in the classifieds if you're interested plus a minolta 70-210mm f/4 on the same listing. if you could stretch your budget a little i'm sure we could come to some sort of arrangement.

just read the post above about needing 100 posts to view the classifieds, so i'm not sure if i should be mentioning my for sale thread?

if it's a problem can a mod delete my post?

I started with my bridge cameras a Fuji s2000 and s3000 then onto a dslr.

Canon 350d
Canon 30d and then
Canon 5d ml 2

So as others have said the bridge cams are a great start, I even still have mine!

top scorers in the championship i tell thy ;)

the only reason im looking for sony is that my dad has the alpha 200 and if we both had sony we could by a large range on lenses and swap when we want instead of both having to buy the same size lens if i get a canon/nikon

£300 but i would like this to also include an extra lens, to go with the kit lens

How many lenses does your dad have? If he has 2, you could always just borrow one of his and then get yourself a better body.

my dad has an alpha 200 with the kit lens, is it 28-55? he also has a tamron 70-200 i think.

my dad has kit lens of 3.5-5.6/18-70 is that means much, he tamron lens is 28-200 but i can see any other numbers on it!

If you were willing to forget the extra lens and borrow your dad's, a quick Amazon search brought this up. Can't claim to have any in-depth knowledge about Sony, but out of 25 reviews, 19 are five stars, which makes me think it's hardly an awful camera...

problem is my dad uses the tamron lens more than the kit lens so i would have to get the extra lens which would be around the £400 mark which is too much :(

Hey Banana,

I dont know if this will help, but try going to your local CeX, kind of a videogame/geekware shop. They tend to have a few of the older dslr with kit lens knocking around for well under £200. The good thing is they give you a 1 year guarantee so more peace of mind when buying 4year old+ kit.

Learn the ropes etc then maybe buy a really cheap prime lens like the 50mm 1.8. That way when you upgrade you'll just have to buy a camera body and save some cash in the long run.

While CEX have some fairly good prices, they dont have any indication of shutter count.

Alternatively you could try out MPB Photographic. Although you only have a choice of Nikon or Canon with that site
