Wahay! I finally have my first dslr

I bought it from a fellow TP member (thanks dlphotography) and I am so far well impressed.

My new baby is a Canon EOS 1000D kit with EF-S 18-55 lens.

Now I have to put it together and read through the manual.

Tomorrow it will be put to good use when I attend my friends 40th birthday party. I have never been good at taking profile shots, but hope that will improve now that I have decent equipment.

Any tips, tricks, advice or shared experience of this camera and/or photography would be greatly appreciated.

I am now on my way to hopefully becoming an ace photographer one day and aspire to be as good as many of the TP members here, especially the winner of the TP Photographer of the year. I know that's a long way off, but at least I have taken the first step.

I look forward to a fantastic relationship with my new camera.

Watch out TP, I will be posting loads of pics soon for C&C

Thanks for a great forum, I have had a great time so far and already learned a bit from fellow members.

Now I can use the :canon: emoticon :p

Take care all and have a great weekend

Dawn :)

I hope that you enjoy it.

The only advice that I can give you is to get to know the camera and practice.

Good luck, I hope that you get some shots you're happy with. :)

Woof Woof, thank you :)

I have christened her tonight, and my new baby is going to be known as 'Foxy Roxy'.

I'm sure we are going to have much fun! I have got the battery, SD and lens installed, all I need to do now is turn her on!

So here we go ......

Same advice as before practice & get to know your camera. I would say that if it is a friends birthday maybe it is more important to get some shots to remember the day so you could use auto or programme mode so you get some keepers. You can then start learning when it doesn't matter if you get 50 shots that you end up deleting them all!

However many photos you take, take more. Repeat. Rinse :D You can delete the photos that didn't work, but you can't capture the moment once it's gone.

Thanks for the advice James, I will use that as a starting point :)

You guys are ACE! Thanks, keep the info coming! I am like a sponge and taking it all on board! D :)

I've joined the new dlsr club today with a sony a380. so here's to learning loads of great techniqes from you guy's.:)

My advice is read the manual! Seriously there is a so much good information crammed into them that its definately worth reading more than once.

If it's indoor/at night and you're going to attempt to use one of the 'creative modes' on your camera make sure you've bumped the ISO up, I found my 1000D struggled at 1600 ISO so I'd stick to 800. This will improve shutter speed and help reduce blur. Also make sure that the switch for the IS (image stabilizer) is in the 'on' position, again this helps reduce blur, this time by correcting for camera shake. If you are in a 'creative mode' I'd suggest Av (Aperture value) then select the lowest f-number, this will give you the widest aperture and hence the most amount of light entering the camera, but will give you a shallow DOF (Depth of field) meaning the item you focussed on will be clear, but the background and anything in front/behind will become blurred very quickly.

I hope this helps!

Oli.

OK I think, after much frustration getting the cam going!

OMG I was on a mission last night, trying to understand how to operate 'Roxy', but funny thing is I actually enjoyed having a play today.

I have posted one of my pics in a forum tonight 'portraits' I think.

There is still so much I have to learn, but at least I have made a start.

Cheers

Manuals can be a bit dense, especially for a beginner. Check on Amazon for some guides for your particular model. I did a check for my Canon 450D and found no less than a dozen books on the subject! I found the John Wiley digital field guide on the 450D a great help.

Good luck with your new camera.

Good for you, it's great to get your first camera. i am still enjoying mine and (after a year+) still learning new things every day. Just take it easy, and enjoy it. and remember, just because you have a DSLR, doesn't mean you have to know about it all NOW!!!!! so take your time.

Will look forward to seeing some of your pics!!

Thanks for the tips guys. I just feel like there is so much to learn, but yes I am enjoying it and taking it in small steps so as to not get too overwhelmed by it all.

Cheers

I started off on the Av mode so at least the camera takes control of the shutter speed etc., and I could have fun playing with depth of field. Once I'd got confident with that, I switched to Tv so I could see how time delays affected the shots. Then manual!

Have fun!

Thanks SwissDot

Thanks :)

I haven't got to Av yet, still taking a few snaps in Auto mode until I get used to holding the camera.

Hope to progress on to being a bit more adventurous this week.

Will post pics when I have taken a few.

Take care

Dawn :)

Me To. Hope the weather picks up or my son's eye's will be burnt out with the flash.

 Larry58

I know what you mean .... it hasn't been the greatest of weather for getting out and about. Fortunately I had to opportunity yesterday to take some pics at a birthday party, but not very good at portrait and it needs a lot more practice. Asked my 5 yr old son today if he wanted to be my guinea pig and he said 'whats that'. So I had to go into an explanation, but he has agreed to be my main subject, might have to invest in some dark glasses for him

Hope you get to take some pics soon.

Take care

Dawn :)

Unfortunatley mines more of a stropy teenager and not to keen on doing any modeling. I'll try and bribe him and let him take some pictures. Well thats if he can get the camera out of my hands.

Happy shoting and your picture in the other thread looks good to me..

Simon

Good luck Simon (Larry58) with the bribery  although I can understand about the 'not wanting to let go of the cam' :D

Thanks for the comment about the pic in my other thread. I took a few other shots which I might post to TP, mainly because any C&C would contribute to my learning how to take better portrait pics.

Cheers

Hiya Micloi,

Thanks for the book recommendation. I have checked it on Amazon and it is a good price, so I will be ordering tonight.

Cheers

Dawn :)
