New 60d or 2nd hand 7d?

What would you recommend?

This will be to replace my 400d which works perfectly but having played in Jessops for the last 3 weeks with different lenses my face being the 17/55 I feel the need to upgrade.

I take shots in low light indoors and motorsport (rallying mainly).

I have a 55-250 which is just about quick enough for the distance, of course a faster lens will follow when money allows.

Would love to hear your comments regarding buying second hand over a new "lower spec" camera.

Same sensor, so it's autofocus that matters.... 60D will be similar autofocus to your 400D, 7D will be similar for static targets but will wee wee all over 400D/60D for moving targets... Your choice.
 
I guess static isnt the issue, moving objects with better focus would be excellent. Any thoughts on new/second hand?
 
Only one I know of is that some have claimed theirs constantly misfocus. Buy one less than a year old and with a UK receipt and if that is the case all it would cost you to get sorted is £10 to send it insured to Canon (I had a problem with my second hand 5DII that was sorted by Canon with the original receipt).

Guess it's a matter of finding one with some warranty left really.
 
7D and 17-55/2.8 is ridiculously good, especially in low light. Great AF with all cross type sensors at f/2.8 and it will have AF micro adjust as well to fine tune everything just right. I would go for that combo any day over 60D and lesser glass.

Personally I would go with used 7D, as you have mentioned that you are into motorsports it would be ideal as the AF will have the edge over the 60D.

Just once, the camera will remember individual settings for the lenses. It's a bit of work to find the right values but worth it.

Just the once for each lens although I've had no need to do this with any of my lenses on my 50D.

Once. It's more use with primes than zooms though as zooms can be out differently at different focal lengths. The "within 1 year guarantee" is what's important ;)

Darren, would you worry about buying one out of warranty?

Nope not at all, I've seen them go for less than £900 on here and that would certainly tempt me.
We've got a lot of 7D owners here and I've read nothing about any failing and quite a lot of die hard Canon users bought them as soon as they were released.

I'm sorry, but that's nonesense. The 60D's AF is much better than that of the xxxD line of cameras. It's similar to that of the 50D. The 7D will be better again for fast moving objects, however, which is why it's priced in its own class.

I have to agree with manualfocus-g above.

I have used 40D, 1D3, 1Ds2 and 60D extensively and the AF on the 60D is absolutely fine. It may not be as customisable as other bodies or have all cross-type sensors or have a dedicated digic IV processor controlling it but you would have to throw some pretty difficult lighting and fast moving subjects at a 60D before it fails to AF sucessfully.
 
Meant to add. The 60D is an excellent camera and unless you are a dedicated wildlife guy the OP should give it some serious thought.

Whilst thinking about it try to find a cr@p review of the 60D; there are not many

I've never used the 50D/60D but the bit in bold is what I was trying to get across..
 
Thanks for the input chaps.

I guess another reason for looking at the 7d is that if I get the 60d will I be wishing in a few months that I had bought the 7d? It's extra cash now, which I haven't really got but will probably stop me from upgrading sooner.
 
I'd hope not as there is no way I can afford anything better ! LOL
It's just down to glass really now.
I am worried about the 17-55 collecting dust but most people say it doesn't affect image quality.

LOL... You'll like it when you get it. Look out for Jessops clearance. You might get yourself a deal there if you are lucky.
17-55 does collect quite a bit of a dust but I do agree with most people, it doesn't afect the IQ. It is an excellent lens although personally I do find the vignetting annoying. :|

Well the 7D has a peripheral illumination correction profile for the 17-55 so I'd expect it to largely correct any vignetting in-camera.

Does the 60D have spot AF? A feature for static shooting on the 7D that I really rate. As for tracking AF, I reckon my 7D is actually better than my 1DIV

Thats wrong info, the 60D focus is faster than the 400D, also slightly faster than the 50D.
 
The only thing I envy from the 7D is micro adjustment and new 19 point AF. If these are important for you, get the 7D.

Agreed, small point but actually the 60d sensors are all cross type.

(Edit - If you mean spot metering the 60d has it, but if you meant spot AF I don't know what that is so I doubt the 60d has it.)

Did I mention speed? It's fairly clear that apart from the 1 series and 7D, most Canons have similar focus systems. Yes, they may be tweaked, they may be faster on each new version, but they are similar.... You get 9 point on the 60D, 9 point on the 400D... You don't get an evolution like you did with the 7D....
