I'm currently starting to network all the pc's in our office all to have there own static ip we are also going to be putting the mac address in the router too as there is option for both , i was told that by adding both it is more secure , hope this is right anyway i suppose there is going to be many questions that i will need help with as i go along so any help would be great

1st of all all current computers are xp except for my mac and 1 other computer which is windows 7 64 bit

if i transfer all pc's over to windows 7 will the work better with likes of the printer as at the min the 64 bit machine does not like to print and I'm struggling to understand why

printer is a network printer with is own fixed ip address as the min

what do you mean by adding the mac address? you can add the mac address to the dhcp server reservations?

do you have a win 7 64 bit driver available? how is the printer connected and shared out?

sorry what do you mean it has its own driver? you'll need to install the software driver onto the machines to tell them what to send to the device..

check the printer manufacturer site for a win 7 64 bit driver and install that then try installing again.

sorry neil when i say it has its own driver i meant the machines has already got the correct driver download and installed from the sharp website that why I'm thinking is there conflict ion between the network some where

yeah all you are doing on that mac page is setting which device uses what ip. nothing to do with security.

so youve installed the printer on the 7 machine, what happens when you print? do you get a little bubble pop up by the system tray with an error?

i was told if you use the mac address if you activated it only people that is on the network that has been allowed access via the mac way is the best (sorry to be vague only going of what i have been told )

what is best way just assign a ip address to a pc then set a static ip up in the router and this way or is it best with the mac address and ip address way forward

update on printer

i tried to print but this time i found something i have never seen before in one of them menus the printer offline printing button was ticked which i realised why so tried to unstick print and no luck

i have now since done a system reboot from scratch new partition blah blah and pop it works fine printing in less then 5 mins from downloading of the driver

so something is corrupt but now fixed

nope. every other machine that connects to the network will still get an IP irrelevant of whether their MAC is on that list. all that list will do is give out a certain IP matches the MAC.

id still do the MAC to give a static, that means that if you leave your DHCP range including those addresses then they wont be issued to other kit causing a conflict.
