netbook problems.

Ah, I was kind of hoping Linux since I know it is possible to install it via a USB. I am not to sure if it is possible to install XP this way.

I have used Daemon tools before to mount an .ISO image of Vista and carried out an installation this way. Although you would need to download one and I am not to sure if you can do this from the Microsoft site. I used a backup .ISO that I ripped from the disc provided with my PC. This should work if you are able to get an .ISO image of XP.

Best way would be to beg/borrow/steal/buy an external CD drive and install from that or if you feel adventurous you could open up the netbook and take out the drive (Google for instructions) and put that into your PC.

I could do that using Imageburn.
Looks like a busy weekend ahead!:bang:

I recently installed XP onto a netbook using a bootable USB stick/key and it was fairly easy/painless to do.

I followed the instructions in the video on this page and it worked a treat: Click

I would advise watching the video through a few times and take note of the advice on not removing the USB key when rebooting the netbook during the install process.

Hope this helps.

Take care, Keith

Is there not a partition on the drive with the restore software on it?

That would be my first step.

Otherwise pretty much any netbook should have the netboot capability to allow you to boot from a network drive and install a new os from that. A bit of a faff to set up though (dhcp service, tftp service)

id be extremely surprised if itunes and/or msn caused it to blue screen, its more likely to be hardware issues or hard disk errors.

my first port of call for XP would be to go to START -> RUN and type in:

chkdsk c: /f

select yes to schedule on reboot. then restart. see if it finds and issues.

Personally, if she has only had it a week my first call would be to the supplier.

If I were the supplier my first instruction would be to re-initialise it. So many people screw up PCs by installing rubbish/viruses that it isn't viable to support the software for free. Hence they almost always want you to prove that you havn't screwed it up.

all true

there should be a way to recover it to factory settings
however the supplier should be able to provide you with this information as you should have the disks or the means to do so

You may come unstuck with that argument under the sale of goods act, at the moment the netbook is not fit for the purpose it was sold, therefore the supplierer would have to repair it and prove it was the customers fault, at which point they cold charge.

Spence, I would return it and see what the shop says, as I said above, under the sale of goods act it is not fit for purpose, if they are no help and you paid by credit card, get in contact with the credit card company and explain the situation and they will charge back against firm. Hope this helps on this side of things, although I have no idea on installing the OS again.

so if i put petrol in my diesel and peugoet had reasonable suspicion that it was a common user problem i could get my car replaced free?

Simply they could prove that you had put the wrong fuel in and they would charge you, simple as that.

in fact:

herever goods are bought they must "conform to contract". This means they must be as described, fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality (i.e. not inherently faulty at the time of sale).

and..

In general, the onus is on all purchasers to prove the goods did not conform to contract (e.g. was inherently faulty) and should have reasonably lasted until this point in time (i.e. perishable goods do not last for six years).

i would take it back to where you got it from, make use of the one year warranty

if it is a BSOD( blue screen of death) it is normally hardware, or a driver conflict

Neil, Surelyl you would expect a netbook to last longer than a week. therefore the sale of goods act does come into effect iirc.

This was free on a mobile broadband deal from Virgin media.
I'll give them a ring to night & keep everyone posted on the outcome.

Thanks for all your help.

Spence

Please do, I will be interested in the outcome

last as in not fall to bits yes. software is an inheritly different kettle of fish though as the smallest of user mistakes can render it unusable.

OK point taken, will be interesting to see the outcome

I'd take it up with the supplier first. They might just swap it out, then there's no need to worry about retail law, chargebacks and reinstalling anything.

They don't come with restore on a partition and no XP disk. They don't come with MSN or Itunes installed either so they might argue that is the problem and from what you are saying they are possibly correct.

Is yours red or black?

itunes and msn shouldnt touch any of the boot up files so as said i would be extremely surprised. unless the ipod driver is screwy but that would only blue screen if the ipod is plugged in during boot if i remember rightly.

I don't think I would come unstuck. I'm with Neil. Sounds like the physical mahine is fine but the user has installed variius sftware which has caused problems. It looks like it has become 'unfit' as a result of the owners actions.

If you buy a car and then fit all sorts of mods, the dealer would be quite justified in washing their hands of any issue which may be related.
