Just bought my daughter a netbook for university and want to get MS Word onto it

I have a licensed copy of MS Office from work, the netbook has no CD drive so how would it get loaded please

Any answers needs to be in laymans terms for me i'm afraid

Thanks

Either put the netbook on a pc network and run a cd drive as a network drive and install via that or buy an external cd drive with usb connection.

I use one of the DVD drives on my desktop and allow the netbook to share this drive over the network.
you could also use an external CD/DVD drive

Copy it over onto a pen drive on your main computer and load it from the pen drive.

Dave.

Thanks, how do I share with my Destop PC over a network

Apologies for my inexperience

Most MS software now comes with a validation routine to prevent piracy which is effectively what you are doing here as your work licence will only be for one installation. If your daughter is at university you can buy academic versions very cheaply. Alternatively a quicker solution may be to down Open Office with is free from the net and as I understand is very close in functionality to MS Office.

You are going to run into issues loading anything on this machine and trying to share computers is not something that is that straight forward. I would strongly recommend that you obtain an external cd drive for the netbook (which will probably connect via a USB port) as in the long run it will save you so much grief.

+1 to Open Office. its just like MS Word, but without the monopoly.

Thanks, did wonder about the licence issue although I have loaded it onto my desktop and another laptop too
Open Office sounds good and only want a word processing facility that is compatible with Word

Been a great help, thanks a lot

re licencing - it depends on your licence agreement. most volume licencing has the activation stripped out as youd install multiple copies. our volume licencing also allows for installation at home.

personally i would copy the contents of the CD to a USB memory stick and install if from that.

Turn the CD into an iso file (using any CD/DVD copying software) on one of your other machines
Install Virtual Clone Drive (Free) onto the netbook
Mount the ISO file (either from USB, over the network, whatever..)
Install as if it were a plugged in CD.

Licensing...
From Microsoft's licensing website (under exceptions / additional terms)
Work at Home (WAH) License. For each WAH license you acquire, the primary user of a device on which you run a separately licensed copy of the software (work device) may install and use one copy of the software on a home device (WAH user). If you upgrade the software on the work device, the WAH user may upgrade the copy on the home device. The WAH user’s right to use the software terminates when the WAH user leaves.

MS do offer another Home Use program where you get separate media and a license (through the program Office costs about £10) but your employer needs to sign up for this and provide you with access to it.

I done mine by sharing the drive on my PC over the network, simple

External CD/DVD drive ordered and hopefully on its way

Thanks all for the suggestions, this seemed the best solution in the long run
