Been asked to shoot some netball, looked around for some image inspiration and it's very light on the ground

Is this because not alot of people shoot this, :suspect: or it's an untapped market

Anyone done any?

Must say it does have a better looking clientel than basketball :naughty:

Phil.

Having coached a great deal I would of thought the fact that you cant move having caught the ball would give you some good balance/ off balance shots. Also you know when they are about to shoot so that might be easier than other games

I hope not, it's bad enough being GINGER, getting my pale sticks out could be too much for them :D

Phil.

You must be :cuckoo: to even think about it.

:D

Seriously though, I got asked by a client I'd done a couple of portraits for if I'd shoot her netball team during practice. I'm no sports tog, I told her, but I'll give it a shot, expecting it to be outside under floodlights.

Well, it was on an indoor 5 a side pitch, horrible lighting, a massive blue canvas thing separating courts along one side, lots of yellow all over the rest of the hall. It was a nightmare.

Never again :D

thanks dave, that the one you quit faster than you agreed to do it?

welcome to the world of indoor sports

horses for courses, basketball is no different, expect the netball team have better legs ;)

sure i have seen netball pics in the critique section mate...

On a serious note this could be an excellent opportunity and with your background well suited to cash in! IMO well worth giving it a go.

This thread will definately be nothing without the pictures!!!
 Hopefully not too long then, will prob be shooting it on Saturday, gotta be careful where I put the watermark tho :naughty:

I'll be doing just that hopefully, and as they cant run with the ball will be good trying to cover the whole court rather than waiting for the ball to come to me  Looking forward to it as a new(ish) challenge

Yes Phil I did the IFNA Netball Europe Open Championships back in 2009.

Ian, cant see any on your site, have you got a linky please?

Found some on photosport.co.nz so it gives me an idea of what im looking for.

Sent them an email saying im free to shoot, so just waiting to hear for the go-ahead.

Cheers Ian, nice work again pal. Makes it worth carrying a drainpipe round with you ;)

Did you find much difference with this and basketball, apart from the obvious moving WITH the ball? Did you sit in your usual place or have to find new ground to get the shots?

Phil,
Something I found important to know whilst shooting Netball was to understand the rules... I know this is a very generic statement but an important rule that I needed to get my head round was the fact that the ball has to be passed through the three thirds of the court and a player must catch the ball in each third... Also that the players are only allowed in certain areas of the court depending on their position.Ie defender, attacker etc etc .

Very strange to begin with but after talking it through with the players during the game and after, did it become a lot clearer, it also gave me a better read on the game.

Thanks Tugster, yeah I read that in the rules, and about players not straying out of their areas, which makes me think I'll have to find a different vantage point to get shots of most players. I checked a thread history with you saying you did netball, have you got a linky to any pics?
Also, couldn't find the timings of the game, basketball has 4 quarters with time outs, what are the netball times

EDIT: just done a wiki search, 60 mins game, 15 min 1/4's, do they change ends at 1/2 time?

I found the ball was thrown around rather quickly and skilfully (often catching me out :)). I was restricted to sitting in one corner which suited me and guess this was only because it was the championships.

Look forward to seeing what you get mate

Yes I'm also interested in some shots..

Hmmmmm might have to password this lot, could make more out of you lot than the team

Got the nod to shoot - who's got the first bid for the password

Me me :)

Liar you just want the pics for yourself.

Im gutted Rob, was looking forward to doing something (slightly) different :(

They will let me know the times of the rescheduled game so i'll get there eventually

YAY managed to get there this week, although they were still 'mopping' the floor during the game. Got to say it's totally different to shooting basketball, the ball moves so fast, it's hard to keep up through the viewfinder.
Didn't know the rules or plays so it was a learning curve all round.

You can have a peeky boo here

Enjoy them Rob

Phil

So great shots Phil.

What lens and settings were you using getting in the main?

I would like to have seem more bokeh as some of the backgrounds are so busy. Please remember my point though.

n.b. if I may I have a "criticism" about your website - please take it as constructive.

The navigation arrow are really small. Can you make them bigger?

if you click the view full size (center icon) you can right click and see his settings:)

Too small for me as well so i clicked on the pics at the side instead.

Thanks Guys,

Rob - Nikon D5000, Tamron 90 2.8, iso 3200 ss 250.
(sorry Rob - please remember my point..... which was? Not being flippant here :) )

It's a new website and thanks for the crit, whether good or bad i'll take it and use it. I've changed the gallery a couple of times trying to find one that works for me so i'll bear that in mind when looking for one.

Gotta say the game was a total mystery to me. Read a little about the game but the way it flowed kept me on my toes. Found it hard to find a different shot as the ball moves so fast along the court then the 'shot' seemed slow motion

Will I do it again...... hell yeah, was a great atmosphere and I'll try different lens combo to find a better / different shot angle.

Phil.

Phil

I complained about the background blur and about the buttons on your website.

However I also said (& it was my first point)

So great shots Phil.

Maybe nothing can be done about the blur.

Ah, no problem Rob, thanks. I should of waited a while - just woke up from a Sunday power nap

Thanks for the input ;)

Phil
Just out of interest is it not possible to buy these on line or have you just created a viewing gallery?

Gallery2 and trying new theme plugins - found one i like with a lightbox viewer need to remember how to install it

Yup available for selling, just not sorted out the cart yet either, it's a work in progress at the mo. Not that basketball / netball players want to buy - they seem to like the phrase "why cant I put it on facebook? it's free advertising for you"

GGRRRRRRR

Then you need to offer (very) low res images for facebook. These can sell for £3-£6. Some even sell at the lower price with watermark and at the upper price with no watermark.

Graham, I would love for that to happen, even offered it. Had my pics with "STOLEN FROM ............." as a huge watermark, kids don't care :( they are all over facebook. Now part of that problem is my own doing, It's how I got known and gave them away for my own ego boost - let's not go there ;)

I now ask for them to be removed by FB, and they are, but you cant track every image. Even had one guy from the recent finals tell me I should be flattered, hmmm. After a few emails, i'm now a racist bigot :cuckoo:

I know it's going to be a long struggle - but i'm a dedicated maniac with time to kill. I went at it the wrong way round from the start, 3 years later it's more than taking snaps of my son playing, I will get there somehow.

Maybe my workshop will help, but then a thief is a thief and would rather steal than spend a couple of quid!
