In my local town centre there's some beautiful and very colourful flower displays, and I'm dying to go take pictures of them.. but for some reason I'm too nervous.

Also, I'm taking the informal shots at a wedding tomorrow so am extra nervous lol.

Any tips to help me feel more relaxed?

Alchohol usually does it for me. Perhaps that's not the best solution in this case

Don't think about it, just get out there and do it!! You'll relax once you start & wonder why you were so worried!! Just make sure that you look professional & have every right to be there (which of course you do) Is there someone that you can take along with you as this often helps with nerves?
Just be as careful as you normally would be out there & have fun

Also, now that you've told us how nice the displays are, we're going to have to see some pics anyway :p

No drinking today.. at the reception tomorrow a few drinks shall be in order I think.. Although not too many as 1) I want good pics, and 2) It's fun watching all the stiff upper lip, posh brigade get really drunk and silly lol.

How does one "look professional"?

Feel the fear and do it anyway. You won't be so afraid next time.

I did take some pictures yesterday at side of main road, had people walking past me quite often, and whilst I felt like a tit I did it (pics are crap though!). But the town centre is V busy and full of chavs, especially with the school holidays.
I always talk myself out of things, must wear earplugs and ignore me!
xx

I think you are just nervous about the wedding. How can you be nervous about going into your local town centre?

Make yourself go down there and it'll probably take your mind off the wedding tomorrow.

Is it a paid gig, or doing for some friends?

I find that most people who see my pics who aren't into photography seem to love even the mediocor (spelling ) ones.

Try not to fret, take things slow, give yourself plenty of time try to judge the next move before it happens (lens, flash). Best method I've used if you are overcome with nerves is slowly counting to 10 - sounds stupid but I've found that it does work.

This is something I get as well as I often want to take the Camera places but feel that people are looking at me thinking "whats that plonker doing?" or in some cases "That's a nice camera lets take it!"

Guess it is just a matter of trying to remember this is how people get photo's, there is nothing wrong with being there and people are probably just interested to know what your taking pictures of as from their point of view it probably doesn't seem that interesting a photo. <- I havent mastered this train of though yet though

Right well I'm setting off soon... I won't need my external flash with me will I?

 Have a friend walk next to you with one of those T-shirts that says "I'm with this professional photographer dontchaknow!!"

Just act like you know what you're doing - that usually works & carry some business cards around so as when people ask you what you're doing (which they will - just as you've framed that perfect shot!!) then you can say that you are a photographer & that you also offer portraits, candids, or whatever else it is that you like taking pics of.
Start that word of mouth thing going & you'll be fine

Edit: Yes, you may well need your flash for fill light but that's up to you.

Don't have business cards, I'm not professional.. well, not yet. Am doing this wedding tomorrow (informally) and some head shots for a friend soon, but that's only because they don't know anyone else with an SLR lol.
Best get myself some cards done saying "Semi professional photographer, depends when you catch me".

You'll probably find most people look at what you're pointing the camera at rather than at you anyway, and the rest will be ducking and diving so as not to spoil your shot!

Ha ha either that or diving in to the shots and getting whacked by me lol.
Right I'm setting off now, fingers crossed my nerve stays with me.

Can't wait to see the resulting pics ... :D

Good luck, and I must admit I feel self conscious when taking images but then generally find that people are curious

good luck

Most came out really crap tbh, but I have got some I'm happy with... Just putting them on PC then will post them in the animals and nature forum.
