Beginner neewer tt560 flash remote

I bought myself a Neewer tt560 flash. I've never owned a flash before so just really wanted a cheap one to see if I would get any use out of it. It came with a few bits and pieces and I've spent the weekend on Google trying to find out how they're used.

What I can't quite figure out is that it came with a little remote control- when would I ever use that? Surely it's either on top of my camera or its being used as a slave?

Any thoughts welcome. :)

Oh that just made me laugh! I am at a total loss as to what I would do with it. The only thing I can think of is that if I set it up as a slave then I could test the angle of the flash from a far- not even sure why I would want to do that!
 
The remote is an infrared remote for triggering the camera not the flash. Typical usage would be for selfies, group shots etc.
It is supposed to be a universal shutter trigger there are buttons that will operate the shutter on the major camera manufacturers. eg the buttons are separated by the markings on the remote so:
P=Pentax N= Nikon C= Canon S = Sony

Oh, I see - I'll probably just stick to using the timer though, not that I'm a fan of 'the selfie'. :p
