Good evening great and good people of TP. I have a Neewer tripod with a ball head which I love with one exception; the centre column is long enough that I cant get the camera as close to the ground as I would like.
I know I could invert it but using a waist level finder with that would be impossible, so I'd like to lay my hands on a stubby centre column for it. I've had a look on the neewer site but can't see anything, so does anyone here have any idea where I could get one or one that is compatible with the tripod?

Tremendous thanks
Mads

A short length of the appropriate diameter dowel rod with a hole through for the bolt will turn the trick. Aluminum or wood for the top plate, if needed.

Could always cut it to length with a hacksaw.
Not the best idea to use a long centre column anyway so kills two birds with one stone.

To be honest the only time I've raised the centre column was when I was trying to get the tripod low, I've no raised it to actually use at all

Cut away then, nothing to lose apart from the excess you don't want.

Maybe try to source a used, cheap version of the same tripod and cut down the spare centre column?

No, if anything it will make it more rigid.
Think about a 30cm piece of wood compared to a 5 cm length.
Which one could you snap more easily?

Oh I get that bit, I was just thinking is it solid-ish the whole length, or just each end?

I expect its a hollow tube with a cap one end and a threaded bolt at the other.
No idea what tripod you have or what the centre column looks like so can't comment accurately.

My tripod came with a short column piece for low level use, others have a method of removing the centre column entirely.
If it were me I would remove the bung or cap at the non head mounting end, cut the column down and reinsert the bung/cap.

Maybe post a photo of the centre column here so we can all see what you are describing?

Weeeeeeeeeeell I'm an idiot.
1st, its not a Neewer. Its a Phot-R.
I've undone bits and removed the ballhead and column.

The bung bit is threaded but only the first half inch of the column is so if I chopped it, it wouldn't have any thread to use to tighten.
I've chucked phot-r a tweet, but I'm not hopeful.

The bit with the hook, has that by any chance got a threaded bit inside the silver open end?

I've got a feeling it might work like my old tripod did

I got all excited then... yes, it does indeed have that threaded silver thingy... but...

It seems like somethings missing... it doesn't seem to locate securely, and even fully tightened it still has the play shown in the video.
Inverting it, it sits perfectly, but I can't use my RB67 upside down lol

Pretty sure that the bung in the bottom is there so you can hang a bag/weight on it to give extra stability and if the tripod is as low as it can go, that's not needed so you could shorten the column with no problem.

If you don't want to chop the column up, a local engineering company could easily (and hopefully cheaply!) make you a shorter one with a short length of aluminium bar of the correct diameter and a 3/8" UNC piece of studding.

I'm sure its designed to work like that, maybe try the bolt the other way round.
Another thought and I suspect its the right answer, unscrew and remove the large bit you tighten to secure the centre column.

So I've given both a go... neither have worked, the bung gets pulled up into the body of the tripod and is still unsecure, not as much as the video, but still enough to concern me :(

Anything else you can remove, I also seem to recall a small sleeve inside the part that the centre column slides into.
Just too much of a coincidence that its threaded the way it is for it not to work like that.
I've just looked at a video on Youtube of a bloke using a Phot R tripod and he has it the way you want it
have a look here at 10 minutes

I remember watching that.

I've managed it but I noticed I had to loosen the bit that holds the column in place for it to be anything like steady.
I'm concerned the bung will work its way up inside the tripod body, but we'll see.
Thinking of investing in some washer to use as spacers rather that relying on the plastic twisty bit

I'm sure its supposed to work like that somehow or the other.
If you can't fine tune it any more washers might be the answer.

I do remember using my Gitzo like that and also having a few teething troubles getting it sorted properly
