Neewer NW985

It must be quite new, Flash Havoc haven't done a review yet.

I think it is - first time i've seen it. I was wondering more about the specs e.g. sync modes, flash modes, cycle time etc... looks quite feature packed compared to some other models (even Canon and NIkon) but I dont really know what I am looking at yet.

I see their manual ones are only £25.00

It's a bit confusing, it's sold as TTL but all the reviews suggest it's manual with TTL triggering (like a YN 560).

Personally, on the evidence I'd avoid it and buy something that more people know about:
Yongnuo
Godox
Nissin
Metz

If you're thinking you'll sometimes use it on camera, get a TTL flashgun, if it's purely for off camera, Manual only will be great.

Looks like they've ripped off a Nissin. That menu system is fairly unique.

I think all the reviews are for the 560 and not for this model. Neewer seem to rebadge all of the other brands you have listed, mostly Yongnuo.

Just thought I would update - ordered the flash on sunday and it arrived today. It is definately e-ttl and working fine with my eos7d. It actually came packaged as a Triopo who I believe also rebadge Yongnuo's.

It has a zoom range of 18 - 180 and guide no. is 58. It has 2 slave modes, rear curtain sync, pretty fast recharge cycle, high speed sync (up to 1/8000 sec), multi flash, FEB.....

Don't really know what I am doing with it and I guess only time will tell as to how reliable it is. Just need to give myself a crash course on using flash again - it's been a few years!!

Does anyone know if the range finder on these can damage eyes? Particularly newborn children?
'Range finder' ?

But the answer to what I think your question is; small flashguns don't damage eyes, even newborns.

I bought one of these,

It is E-TTL but I find I have to subtract 2.0 EV to get the right exposure.

Also manual zoom using my 35-70 F2.8 Nikon on a D700.

But for 40 quid I'm happy to make these adjustments.

Do you mean the AF assist lamp? I know on the Godox V850 its a bright pattern of crosses thats projected on the subject that looks quite "laser" like, I have no idea if it can damage a childs eyes though.

I'm no doctor so obviously disclaimer and all that. But the AF assist are LED's through a piece of red plastic. It's not a laser.

So I very very VERY much doubt it. That said....i don't guarantee anything if you sit there firing it into a child's eye repeatedly. lol

I thought it would be stupid to design it with a laser; but it is from China... I've read a few of the articles about flashguns supposedly being dangerous and know a lot of the information was false.

That said - I still don't feel reassured it IS safe to use with a newborn!

Despite the fact that almost all professional newborn photographers use studio flash, which is much more powerful than a speedlight?

Hi, I have one of these on my Christmas pressie list and have a question for Airscene or GreenNinja Does the flashgun come with a stand and if it does it have a threaded hole on the underside that would fit onto my tripod for OCF stuff or will I need to buy a cold shoe adapter or similar? Thanks in advance.

I got the same flash for my Nikon - it comes with a stand & case... Very impressed for £40....

It is similar to the Nikon AS-19 stand with a threaded hole in the base

Thanks for the reply Pete, hopefully I get one now!! Can I ask do you use the flash with wireless triggers and if you do which ones?

It has a stand definately but as to wether there's a tripod thread in the bottom I don't believe so.

From memory (as I'm at work) I don't believe the stand's deep enough to have one integrated.

Of course I may be wrong.

There is a tripod stand thread in the bottom of the mount, and even better is that the case has an internal pouch to place the mount... Win, win.......

You could try the Shanny SN600SN Master Flash i-TTL High Speed Sync 1/8000s GN62 Flashgun Speedlite, it gets very good reviews and seems to be more established, I know Martin from here did a youtube review a while back
