Need to think 'of the story' more.

Was at the abandoned Charlton vs Doncaster game on Sat.

Totally missed the arguments between Dickov and the Ref when he first took the players off. Looking at the photos that have been published they weren't facing my way and were at the other end of the pitch, BUT I was chimping so would have missed it anyway.

When the players were off, I went to the stand to try and edit and send what I had. I then missed the best pics of the Doncaster players with the brooms pushing the water off the pitch :bang:

So totally my fault and a lesson learnt that I need to think more about 'the story'.

I did, as mentioned in another thread get a tiny pic in The Sun and also on-line with them, BUT I could have had more usage if I had been clued up.

It's all part of the learning experience, Rob. You almost have to have eyes in the back of your head in this game, I'm sure!

While I was at Watford on Sunday, I took some shots of the Sky team doing a piece to camera, came back to the dug-outs and another photographer asked who a suited guy was talking to Billy Davies. I didn't know, but he said he had been snapping away while they were having a heated "discussion". May be something, may be nothing for a future story, but you never know.

It's stuff like that I tend to miss

kipax rule of thumb ...if it moves.. photograph it.....if it doesnt move....photograph it.

papers will always like anything thats different.. doesnt matter how off the wall.. somehting different will beat the best action shot you take on the night.. because great action shots are ten a penny...

Waiting for Tobers to come in to this thread

Brilliant - now committed to memory

Ah yes of course.

Would that I had some more of those!

I've got to say that doing Prem games is a pain as you have to get pics in quick to beat the big agencies, so you sacrifice shooting time to send goals/celes. Tricky gamble. I keep thinking about just staying focused on the action and leaving the editing until later but find it very hard.

Note I only shot the Terry pic because I was so fed up having got nothing all game and my laptop battery had died so I couldn't edit anything. Maybe there's a message in there for me!

as you have to get pics in quick to beat the big agencies,

I dissagree with the above statement..

If theres a race for time then its everyone.. not just big agencies.. however most of the time no race.. tonight will be a good idea to get them in quick.. but why ahead of big agencies? . why not just ahead of everyone... saturdays..no rush IMHO and in my experience..

That's interesting. What we need is a picture desk editor to give us the lowdown. The sage advice I've been given my many is that they'll pick goal/cele shots out as they come in and the fastest one has the best chance of being used given a bunch of similar shots.

If you're later, then the more likely it is that the desk will ignore it as they've already got what they want, unless you have something very different indeed.

EDIT: Yes, you're right, I want to get them in ahead of everyone, not just the big boys.

like i say..on a night match.. get em in quick.. but weekend.. i dont believe they are sat doing it at 3pm sat.. I ahve had calls from nationals at 11pm at night about pics.. sent stuff in 10pm got used.... just saying i dont think sat is so much of a rush job :)

From what i have picked up over the last few seasons shooting football.
You need THE pic, that tells the story of the article. And you preferably want something better than the big boys. ie. if they have celebrated to you and looking in your camera lens.

Getting the images in first really can make that much difference.
Obviously sending in at 10.30pm and a wednesday night isnt going to happen.

Well im one to believe sending quick helps aswell. Half the time they have text there waiting ready to drop a photo in. if it fits around the text theyll drop it in. This is why i also file different frames in different crops for goals / cele's etc. Thats a subject thats come up before and it seems everyone has mixed opinions on this.

So it's you lot who are to blame for all the crap in the Tabloid footy supplements on Sunday and Monday

I totally agree with you Rob(mr Fish)!,but!.

I have also sent in pics like Tony as late as 9.00 pm, (I know! I should have found them earlier:razz:!!), & it's been used because it highlights the media interest in the game as said by Chris, (ie man of the match/England selection spec etc).
I try to wire as many images as quick as poss but I hate to miss something important if my heads buried in a laptop cos, I'm there as a photographer?. Last night's game was frantic! as soon as a team scored the other equalised!. I was just editing the equaliser & they scored again!! result being I missied the initial strike & just got the "turn & cele":shake:.

So TBH both camps thoughts are true so tough titty Rob!(OP) lol

Did you see the horribly out of focus double page spread from the Arsenal game in the Sun today? It was a remote camera and it's truly dreadful. Hopefully it wasn't anyone on here :D

I wish it was me but no 'credit' printed on the pic

I could link you now to some seriously shocking images from within the RL fraternity, i personally have never or never would send in that sort of rubbish even if my income depended on it, some of them are so OOF its unbelievable and some of them are so far out of level you would think some of the games were taking place on the ski slopes of val d'isere rather than the level rugby fields

Some people seriously have no pride in their work and need to get out of the business, we often moan about how little money there is within sports photography but to be honest if i were a newspaper editor i wouldn't pay some people in Rabbit tods let alone money

Have to agree here.
Was sat at a city match last week, and the guy sat next to me was shooting frames and frames off not even looking through the viewfinder.
It makes me think, has this industry gone past the art of photography and capturing the moment

I've been guilty of one in the past, but I'm over critical of my photos now. I don't submit anything unless I'm really happy with them.

If your living depends on it your less fussy.. they can print a OOF pic of mine if they want.. so long as they are paying...

However.. I will now go the opposite to that.. If I am sending on spec.. I only send goals or celebrations or somehting important.. I dont just flood them out wiht man on ball pics.. if its 0-0 then I may send nowt.. but usualy i am on a commision and sending spec as an extra.. not depending on it...

saturday games I send from home later on.. get published no problem.. the games I do then the best chance is goal pull outs on mondays as rarely much given to league 2 on a sunday..

night matches yes.. get them send in quick.. but day matches.. not so much a rush.. trust me.. proven the point many times:)

PS .. sometimes in a rush and on a laptop pitchside..tonight for example...its hard to tell whatsa sharp and what isnt.. i gte home sometimes and cringe at what i have sent :(

Why would you send nothing atal? Ive done plenty of 0-0's and got published, as well as games with goals and theyve ended up using 'man a ball pic' as the main image and not the actual goal pics. Yes goals and cele's are important, but i never over look decent stock and action, and always send it in whatever the situation. its paid off for me many times.

As I say.. like tonight.. two commisions... had it been a 0-0 probably wouldnt have sent anyhting at all to nationals on spec... thats the situation i mean..

Menu/View/Full Size

Its easier to send sharp and in focus images in than blurry rubbish

So often I get home late on a Saturday and am embarrassed about what I have just done... and then there is my photography...!!
