need some suggestions, I was hoping to pickup a Nikon 80-200mm 2.8 AF ED lens for decent price on auction. But it seems i have missed my chance :(

now i can't get anything for less than £450. is there any decent alternative, obviously it won't be f2.8?

What length does it need to go up to? 200mm, 300mm? If so, FITP's recommendations above certainly come into that price range.

If not that long I can recommend the Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 - I picked up a 2nd hand copy for a really good price a couple of weeks back. :)

Be interested to hear what you think about that Steve!

When I was a DX-er I always fancied trying this lens, the compact size really appeals!

I've been looking into buying a 55-200 VR or 70-300 VR, but the f-Stop is more like f/4.5-5.6 It depends what u need it for I guess. I've been advised to definetly go for a VR ***, especially with the 300mm.

both are MUCH cheaper than £450 though!

If you need an f/2.8 lens, then I don't really see how the cost of variable aperture zooms are relevant.

If you need f/2.8 for fast shutter, you need f/2.8...?

Tamron 70-200 if you don't mind the slow focus - might squeeze in under £450...?

Optically it's 70-200 VR / Canon 70-200 IS territory.

I've only had a little bit of a play with it so far, have to say it's ticking the right boxes up to now. It seems evenly sharp through the focal range and is a great size and weight for carrying about.

Really happy with it so far and it complements my Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 very nicely. :)

forgot to mention, it should be minimum 200mm

the 70-300 vr, isn't that pretty poor in terms of optics for the price?

I would consider the sigma 70-200, but the fact is that there are loads of bad copies out there, and it's scared me off it. otherwise it would have been a fantastic lens to have. I don't believe i will be needing the 2.8 but VR would compensate to certain extent.

just had a quick read up on the sigma, am right in saying that the APO prefix means it can have an extender attached, ie the 2x to make the focal length longer?

anyone got any experience with Tokina's 80-200 f2.8?

Not sure where you got that information from? The 70-300mm VR punches above its weight IMHO.

i was going by this particular site http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/250-nikkor-af-s-70-300mm-f45-56-g-if-ed-vr-review--test-report?start=1

i also had a quick look at the 50-150 http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/322-sigma-af-50-150mm-f28-ex-hsm-dc-nikon-mount-review--test-report?start=2 looks like the business, jwith the 1.4x adaptor which would be a 70-210mm f4. Now this lens doesn't have any front focus issues?

My lens has no focus issues at any focal length that I can make out. I'm very happy with it.

the question is more to the fact that are you aware of any bad copies out there. :) I also send you an PM regarding to lens

As with all lenses there are bound to be issues with some copies - you'll never find a perfect lens.

Recently tried a Sigma 50-150mm II which had a front focus problem. Sigma UK service advise 2 - 3 weeks to fix it. Most of the used examples on fleabay are version I or the seller "doesn't know". As someone on fredmiranda.com says: "I really want to like this lens." But . . .

Bear in mind that today's full frame cameras should be affordable in a couple of years, and the 50-150 is for crop sensors.

My first zoom was the Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8 AT-X Pro and it was a cracking lens, built like a tank and very good optically and you could do a lot worse.

Edit: I can't remember if it was 70-200 or 80-200. It's an age thang. :D

it would have been the 80-200 :) thanks! was the autofocus a bit on the slow side? slow means, its really slow, intolerable, no where near AF-S speeds

no where near AF-S speeds

That is pretty meaningless.

Many non AF-S lenses will focus faster than AF-S.

Not all AF-S lenses are equal focus wise anyhow.
