Need some Sony help ASAP

I am going to Japan in 4 weeks time for a 7 day photo trip with my wife with photography as the main reason why we are going..........plus we love Japan.
I currently have both Leica bodies and lenses and Nikon bodies and lenses and my wife uses a Sony R7r with the 50mm f1.4, 16/35 f4 and 24/70 f4
For the last 6 months I have been shooting 95% Nikon as I have been shooting studio and landscape photography so I am enjoying the auto focus function of the Nikon's
Back to the Japan trip..............
I was thinking of taking my Nikon gear D4s, 70/200mm, 50mm and 24mm lenses but really don't want to lug all that heavy gear around so the only other option was take my Leica gear but I don't want to struggle with fast moving photography in Japan using manual focus. So I had the bright idea of buying a Sony body and maybe one lens, then share my wife's other Sony lenses.....................but I have just come off the phone with my wife and she says that her Sony R7r is very-very slooooooooooow (I guess it may have something to do with the 36MP sensor)

So my question is what about the other Sony bodies, are they all as slow as the R7r?
Any advice tips would be much appreciated
 
Try looking at the A7ii - it has faster AF, and also 5 axis in-body stabilisation.
 
Pick up an A6000 body for around £450, then you can share all of her sony lenses, all will be a little longer on the crop sensor obviously.
The A6000's AF is amazingly fast.
 
A6000 seems to get rave reviews for AF, but I'd go for the A7II to get the best out of the lenses you'll have on offer

Also depending on if you can cope with 35mm fixed the RX1R is great and I've had no issues with AF

Cheers mate....... I don't know how long my guestbook was down for but I got an email last week saying it had an error message on the page but it's back up and running again now :)

I just saw some fantastic Leica pictures on Facebook that's got me wanting to now take my Leica gear........... Driving me crazy all this photography lark :)

When your wife say that the A7 is slow what exactly does she mean Single shot or focus tracking?

If you look on Youtube you should be able to find some vids of focus performance, I posted some on page 85 of the owners thread...

I have an A7 and 28-70 and 55mm lenses and I find the speed to be just fine. I've never tried tracking though.

BTW if your wife is anywhere near can't you try her camera and lenses?

All moot if you've made your mind up to take the Nikon, personally I'll only return to a conventional big fat DSLR set up with a gun to my head.

What she is saying is that the auto focus is very slow when trying to lock onto something when its moving for example when out shooting street photography. The times that I have played with it I have also noticed the same especially in low light conditions.
She also has the same lenses as you
And I am sat on an Oil rig in Nigeria while she is kicked back in Malaysia but like I said when I tried it it seemed slow............mind you I am comparing it to Nikon D4s

Jonathan have you used both........and is there defiantly an increase in AF with the v11 model
 
I always turn face recognition and anything fancy off and if you've done all that and therefore given the camera every chance and it's still too slow then... it's too slow.

Mine is fine for what I do and pretty much in line with any other changeable lens camera I've ever had.
 
I can't talk to the Sony, Leica or Nikon systems, but i can talk to the fact of travelling light.

There is something liberating with travelling light for photography. It somehow simplifies and unburdens you from having too many choices.

No - I've not used either in fact, the recommendation is based on the various reviews I have read rather than 1st hand experience.
 
I took the time to completely go through the Steve Huff review of the Sony a7ii and I am sold. I will get it when I get home in 3 weeks time and also take my Leica lenses with me to Japan to try on the Sony
I guess the Nikons will have to stay in the dry box a wee bitty longer :)

Golly. I thought you were leaning towards not bothering and sticking with the Nikon kit.

Hope it works out for you.

PS. Might be an idea to get a spare battery. I bought a cheap one off the auction site and it seems fine.

Yea me too.......I am selling the idea of my wife taking my D800 to Japan and me taking her Sony gear with the new Body :)
Not sure if she will catch on to the fact that the Sony body has changed ;)
