Hi everyone

My name is John and im new to all of this. :) ( i like the icon option , kinda cool)

my partner runs a business with her friend and as a surprise 40th birthday present i want to buy her a new printer but dont know what i should buy her.

Occasionally she has mentioned dye sub printers but even then i havent got a clue what she is talking about :'(

let me tell you what she says about her current printer which by the way is a mitsubishi (that much i know)

the current printer is
- too heavy
- too slow (dont know what they means)

if any one can advise me what i should be buying then i will be very grateful or point me in the right direction so i can take some professional advice

i have around £1000 to spend so need to make the right decision

help

Thanks all
John Palm

We need to know what she prints. There's no one printer that will do everything well.

For the money you are talking about I would suggest the Mitsubsishi CP9550DW , it 's not the newest or the fastest , but it is good value.

Mark has a good recommendation there - but I think the DNP DS40 might be more suitable due to size and weight? And it pops out a 6"x9" print in pretty good time..

And it's pretty close to £1000 :)

Without knowing , but guessing , I reckon the printer that John's partner has is a Mitsubishi CP8000 perhaps?

If the machine is stying in a shop , the weight shouldn't be an issue. If however she is wanting to do event photography and printing on site, yes the weight maybe an issue.

The DNP DS40 weighs in at 14kgs, the new Mitsubishi CPD70 weighs in at 12kgs, teh HiTi P510S at 13kgs. The CP9550DW I mentioned weighs in at 17kgs. These all without print media packs inside by the way.

From what you have said about the current printer it will probably be something like a CP 9550 or 9500 (could be a newer 9800 series) and will have upto a 9" X 6" print size (different sizes available with different media sets).

This is typical of the sort of printers that event photographers use because they are designed with an industrial aspect in mind and will happily print many 10s of thousands of prints.

If that is the sort of printer she is after the read on;

There are much newer and much faster machines available especially if comparing with the 9500/9550 - Mitsubishi's newer machine the 9810 is about double the speed but has increased in weight. There are a number of similarly sized machines with a similar speed at about the £1K mark from the likes of Fuji and Copal.

As has already been mentioned there is the DNP DS40 which is considerably lighter at 14Kg and half the physical height - and importantly also produces images at this increased speed and around the same price bracket. I have been using and demonstrating mine for nearly 2 years and had no issues. In comparison to the large tin box variety they are also remarkeably quiet.

If what you are looking for is more Camera Club / Art print oriented then there are a number of machines from Epson and Canon within the budget that will produce A3+ on a range of different media such as R3880 that has been mentioned.

i looked into the models everyone mentioned and the dnp (for) me seems to come out on top. it has won some awards i read somewhere yesterday,

cant find a distibutor though

mark

thanks for the wiki link, helped me to understand dye printers
:)

John

The thing to do with any big company when you are trying to find out who a UK distributor is , is simply to contact the main company.

By the way , DNP stands for Dai Nippon Printing company .

found a company called photomart?

are they a good company to buy from?

they seem to have the dnp but cant seem to find anyone else you sells it

are they the only one?

Hi John,
It would be a real shame to get something that was not as good as she would have wanted. If possible, get a friend of hers to chat about printing for a friend of hers and try and find out what your partner would recommend to her.....the sort of thing she herself would want in the future. That was you could end up with just the right printer that is just right.

Photomart are the only UK distributors for DNP. Try phoning and asking for a chap called Mark, he'll tell you all you need to know.

Photomart is one of a number of UK companies selling dye sublimation photo printers and supplies.

I am sure that other forum users wil enlighten you as to some more. Grahamm is corrct in saying that currently DNP is exclusive to Photomart, however taht situation may change during teh course of this year.

As Graham said above - call Mark at Photomart - he'll give some unbiased information in terms of the various models available - and as has been said there are many other suppliers you can use - even if you decide Photomart isn't for you. However I've used them, and find the service good, the prices keen, and the advice second to none. (I bought the DNP DS40 off them - so have first hand experience)

Plenty of other suppliers also out there - and lots of people can offer good advice - but make sure you get the right piece of kit! Some of the older stuff can be problematic in terms of media availability.. So choose wisely :)

Thank you for your feed back guys.

You might want to check canon selphy cp800 portable photo printer.
