Hey TP'ers!

I joined a photogrpahy tech class (night ime one) 2 weeks ago, and from now until Xmas we'll be concentrating on Black & Photography and devoping our films etc... Infact last week we spent 2 hours creating and developing photograms in the darkroom! Was quite interesting...

Anyway, the homework for this week is to get myself an old conventional style camera, some Ilford B&W film, and take photos (36 exp) while thinking of the words form, shape, texture & pattern.
Then we will process the photos ourselves.

You can use a compact camera, but my friend gave me this little Canon Z115... apparently its a SLR! (lol, i can't even tell... just looks more like a compact to me!)
EDIT- Good, now i know for sure it's not slr! aha, atleast i got it right!

Here it is:

SO!
I need some inspiration guys!
What will i photogaph?
Remember it's in B&W.

I've been thinking... bricks, water maybe (though i don't kno the best way to go about this..), clothes, my furry beast of a dog, erm plants... but having a little creative block right now. And I've only got til Monday! Uhoh.

Any help or ideas will be really really appreciated! :)

In the late 60s I did a similar theme, I finished up photographing eggs, yes eggs, interpreting the form texture and shape is quit a challenge, I’m sure you can create patterns using side lighting or lighting from beneath through glass. Go for it and good look.

Oh’ and I’m of the opinion that it’s a compact to.

It ain't old either...

You can shoot with that and the pics will be ok, but you're artistic side might be a shade limited without the slr options.

Form, shape, texture and pattern are all pretty abstract suggestions, I'd go for some interesting architecture, parts of, you could cover all those in one shoot with bits of the right building, inside and out.

^^took the words right out my mouth^^

Architecture is great for that kind of stuff. Especially with shadows and picking out details.

Thanks guys!
I was pretty miffed when she gave it to me and told me it was a slr too, but i didn't wanna say...'errr no it ain't' when she went out of her way to get it for me lol. Oh well, atleast I was right! haha

i don't normally shoot architexture, so i guess it'll get me outta my comfort zone!

For really stunning B&W look for contra jour - backlighting. Shoot at the ends of the day, rather than in the middle - that is when the shadows are at their longest, and so the most interesting.

A simple kind of pattern/texture would be chequerplate, with grazed backlighting to accentuat the pattern on the metal. You will start to think of loads more once you begin to thnk about it....get a pen and notepad and start writing a list of ideas. Keep the pad handy for when you have a brainwave!

im doing the same thing at the mo. we have to produe four final images 2 man made and two natural. Im loving working in B&W film i have even just got a medium format. There is something theraputic about taking ages to set up and take one shot.

To be honest i'm a bit nervous about it, since it's not digital i can't go back and delete a rubbish shot..
Also, since it's not a SLR, how do i get the exposure just right? I feel like you just press the shutter release and hope for the best!
How do you ensure your images are properly exposed and everything?

I think its all automatic, you just choose the scene mode, landscape/portrait/sports....whatever, it does all the calculations for correct exposure.
The only thing you control is the framing.
Its a PAS.
For instance, you choose landscape, it chooses max depth of focus which is f/8 and calculates the shutter speed and autofocuses....simple.
