With Lightroom only, it will always be a struggle against a bright sky.

Colin - Many thanks for that, it's a vast improvement on my attempt, I have CS5 so will have to have a play around.
 
You'll need a great deal of highlight recovery for a shot against a bright sky like that.

That also had some shadow recover to bring out detail in the underside of the fuselage, and then some burning in on the clouds using a grey layer in PS.

You could always use an adjustment brush with some blue colour at low opacity once you've recovered as much detail as you can. I've had some success in LR when my sky is lacking in colour.
 
But it's not a blue sky. Why make it blue? Clouds are not blue.
