Hello,

I own a canon 500d, 18-55 IS kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 lens, 430EXII flash.
I want a lens to mainly take candid photos of my son (he is 2 years old) mainly outdoors but I might also use it for indoors. I also want to use it for a general walk lens.

I am considering either the 70-200 F4 (non IS), 55-250 IS or the 70-300 IS.
Which one do you think will be better for me?

Please, for the love of God, it's a lens. Not lens, lens.

Personally I would go for the 70-200 but I've heard (no direct experience) that is the 70-300 is pretty good too but not great in low light.

I would go for the faster option. I have a Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 for taking photos of my 2year old daughter, because I find that the very, very short time she poses means I have to use fast shutter speeds!

If you are taking portrait style shots, and want a general walk about lens, then on a crop camera such as the 500d, you would generally have something in the 17-50mm range, especially if some of your shots are to be taken indoors. I have had the 70-200 (it was my first lens after getting a 400d + kit lens), and found it to produce excellent photo's, however I would have to stand on the other side of my house if using it to frame a person. It made much more sense for sports, general outdoor photo's etc.

What are you actually looking for? If it is an improvement on your existing kit lens then there are many good options such as the Tamron 17-50 F2.8 (about £300) or the Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS (about £700).

Your 50mm prime lens is probably one of the best portrait lenses (on a budget) for a crop camera. Are you feeling that you need more reach/focal length or a better quality setup?

Is it!!!!! really that important .They were asking advise on a lens ,not!! a speling.(:D) lesson :nono:

My son has a 24/135 IS on his 20d as his walkabout lens, 24mm on a cropper might be a bit 'wide' as a portrait lens, although probably fine unless you want to shoot close in and deform him :) should be good for full body shots as he runs off!!
135 is quite long on a cropped camera but overall should be fine as it covers a good spread, doesnt weigh a ton(ne) and wont break the bank either.

I used to have a conon 28-135 lens that was a great walk about lens and can be bought quite reasonably these days especiall as there are a few knocking about second hand.

Don't go away, we're not all spelling nazis ;)

I am! Look: N-A-Z-I-S!!

And whilst we're at it, it's toe-rag, not tow-rag :p

I think you will find it is both. HTH.

Unashamedly nicked from a thread in dpreview-

'This may not surprise you, but this same topic crops up as a thread at regular intervals. The last time there was much consultation of dictionaries, very few of which contained the word 'lens', at least in the meaning that it has been used here. To cut to the chase: no one could find a printed dictionary published prior to 1980 that had an entry for 'lens'. No English dictionaries were found, but a couple of US dictionaries © the early eighties had 'lens'.

An etymological dictionary based on historical principles would be of great use in clarifying the roots of the use of 'lens' for lens. Unfortunately the OED, which follows these lines, is English and does not have an entry.

Of course, not finding an entry doesn't mean the spelling wasn't in use. And finding a source with the 'lens' spelling doesn't mean it wasn't a typographical error. My own opinion is that the variant spelling derives from spelling or typographical errors.'

but it goes on and on and....

welcome to the forum sllo.

70-200 sounds like a good choice, its relatively light enough for a walkabout, produces sharp images and it covers the focal range that you currently dont have.

Would "lens" be pronounced to rhyme with "sense" then? i.e. "lents"?

I'm a wee bit discombobulated...
