These Sigma telephoto "Macro" lenses aren't true macro in the way that say their 105mm is, but that may not be a great issue to you if it's not the primary reason for buying the lens.

The 70-300VR is an excellent lens, but £429 :bonk:

I have the Nikon and yes it is excellent and the VR is well worth having. It is also suitable for full frame (looking to the future) not sure whether the Sigma is.

I paid £635 for a 70-200 sigma f2.8 and I think if your willing to buy the nikon 70-300VR for that price then you might aswell spend a little more.

If not then get the sigma 70-300, its a great little lens, £200 seems alot for it though.

Cool... thanks everyone I think I am sold on the Nikon lens. You lot are FAB!

I've just been going round and round in circles on google with reviews... I knew you guys would have the answer...

N.B - Ask TP first!!!

well done, you certainly won't regret it. The VR at 300mm is a fantastic. I've tried both lenses and don't miss the sigma one bit.

Great. I am so thankful for you guys... found a good deal with John Lewis so off to get it after work... and i'm counting down the minutes!!!

The trouble with that argument is if you're prepared to spend £635 on the Sigma then you'd be as well soneding another 60 quid and buying an 80-200 AF-D Nikon...

I picked up the nikon 70-300 (for motorsport)after buying the D60 at xmas , fantastic lens. I then picked up a used sigma 70-200 hsm and a 2x tele cov from TP classifieds(early birthday present). Tried both a Cadwell last weekend, great results from both although I spent 80% of the time with the sigma as you can get close to the track. Had some good results with the 2x as well. I would have loved the nikon 80-200 AF-s but they are rare and pricey, the AF-D is cheaper but would be harder to use having to manual focus on the D60.

I bought the Sigma for my D700 for £125, new off of ebay. UK Seller, full 1 yrs Sigma warranty. Just checked and they are now £140 (linky)

Its not perfect lens, but I don't shoot alot of long stuff, so I couldn't justify £400+ for a Nikon VR. It is pretty sharp and what macro I have done with it is pretty good also. 1:2 or 1:3 I think the ratio is.

Used it for the first time this weekend... just uploading soem piccies now :)
