I use and recommend Andrews and Arnold. http://aa.nu

Assumes you have a BT line and are in broadband range of the BT exchange. They are expensive but good. For one thing they are an ISP, not a telephone company or a TV company. For another if you ring up for support you will get someone in Bracknell that knows about computers, networks and the internet and wont try to blame BT - if it's BT's fault they will get on to BT to fix it.

What they are not good for : people who torrent, stream or otherwise download lots of data. They don't block or throttle any ports, however their charging is useage (no pseudo "unlimited" here) based so it will get very expensive if you download 10s of gigabytes of data in peak hours every month. Note that peak hours are pretty much office hours (9am-6pm), as they are aimed at businesses. Evenings and weekends have much more generous download allowances.

I use O2, but you will need a BT land line.

It costs about £12 per month, or about £7 if you have an O2 mobile (PAYG is fine so long as you put £10 on it every so often).

We get unlimited downloads, but it is restricted to a fair usage policy, but I don't know what that is in real terms (the T's & C's will tell you), we get a wireless router, free McAfee for a certain number of computers, and UK helplines / customer services.

We have never had a problem with the connection going down in just over 2yrs of use, and have had no need to call customer services except to double check when I could set it all up initially.

You WILL need a phone line. If your local exchange has been upgraded then www.utilities-direct.co.uk and the broadcall package will give you line rental and high speed broadband for 19.99 with ways to reduce the cost even more.

A second vote for o2 here , been with them from the start and only paying £7.50 pm as have o2 PAYG , top up by £10 every 3 months and thats it.
Speed is great for me all day and the helpline is free as its an 0800

Best people I have ever used, 3 years so far. £25 a month for the 2nd package, 30gb on peak unlimited off peak usage, monthly payments, no contract. If you decide you don't want it, you don't pay :)

0 downtime in 3 years.

Have been on O2 for a couple of months now as I got 12 months free when upgrading my phone :D

The transition was superb with excellent communication and it has been a very stable connection...

I was with Zen while living in Oxford a couple of years back and although a good provider if you ever need any support they did not at the time have a 24hr support line...
