I picked up an Olympus FE210 for the wife at about £130, surprisingly capable little cam.

I can vouch for the Fujifilm s5600 about £120 or fuji S6500fd about £200 both excellent cameras but larger than your average compact.

thanks everyone for your advice but i have ended up selling him my old fuji s5000. but i may take your advice to buy myself a little compact
