Hi there,

I would like to buy a tripod for my D200 and don't really know where to look at due to the wide range of models available...

Here are my criterion:

- light and small, I don't want something heavy and bulky since I will have to travel and carry it around quite a lot.
- mostly for indoors and autoportrait utilisation
- price ? I am willing to spend a bit of money on it. I think I will keep it for a while

Where shall I buy it ?

- on the internet (and get it delivered at my UK address)
- Heathrow airport duty free shopping area (I'm flying outside Europe soon)

Thank you very much

Can't really recommend a tripod but I've never ever seen anything in duty free that can't be had cheaper online, other than booze and fags of course.

What do you call lightweight? You have to be careful as if it's too lightweight, it will be unstable... Redsnapper with their ball head seems the best bang for buck...

The redsnapper 283 is good, and not that heavy, but its very big when folded.
You might want to look at the 3 legged thing tripods that fold up tiny small. They cost though!

Hi, congrats on the new camera. I would go for something like the Redsnapper RS 284 and a good head. I have a Manfrotto 804RC2 head which is probably a good minimum spec for the camera. Its nice and smooth in operation and easy to adjust. There are lighter ones but the prices go up.
The RS284 is a 4 section tripod and will close down a little smaller than the 283. Height with Manfrotto head when folded is 61cm, so not too tall. It comes in its own carry bag too.
If you wanted lighter, you would need to go for carbon fibre or aluminium. Manfrotto 190 series are about the same folded size as the 284 and 1.3kg.
My Redsnapper 284 and Manfrotto head weigh around 2.66kg together.

Thanks for all these advice. I will look at all these over the next few days. Any good website for Redsnapper ? There are not that many on ebay - only one actually.

buy a tripod for my D200

I should not have said 'my'. I am using my friend's one atm and still have an eye on ebay for a Nikon D200 !

Thank you for your post.

I realise it could be unstable if it is too light but I would like to get something I can take with my hand luggage when flying (so that I don't have to check in any luggages).

In fact, I just want a tripod to avoid having to find somewhere to put my camera when taking auto-portraits or night shots in towns.

The redsnappers ones seem to be a good deal however too bulky for my use as I travel by train/plane frequently and therefore don't have a car to put all my stuff in. I know I will loose a lot of stability if I go for something smaller/lighter but in the end if the tripod is too big, I won't carry it around at all.

Any advice welcome. Thank you.

I had a look at the Manfrotto compact series on their website and they seem to be the kind of tripod I am looking at buying.

Are there any other brands making similar compact tripod for these prices ?

Thank you
