Hi Folks,

My face thread and question :)

Please advice...

I have a Canon 7D and a Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT.

The problem I seem to have is when I do in door low light events, the flash does not seem to keep up with my camera.

Its annoying as I often get a blank image.

I shoot in manual.

Please advise.

The 7D as far as I know can be set to Max sync speed of 1/250 but to "keep up" you put it are saying you are using bursts of shooting? If so how many in the burst are good?

You must bear in mind that the flash needs time after a burst to recharge, it that the reason it is not keeping up? If you reduce power output of the flash (assuming for your situation that is a viable choice) the will increase the burst length.

Raise your iso and or open up your aperture and you will use less power per flash, reducing your recycle time.

The less power the flash will use, the faster it
will recycle and the shorter the flash duration.

Not familiar with that flash unit, but some photographers requiring faster recycle times and bursts of flash (or lots of flash over a long event) will use a supplementary battery pack. I have one for my Nikon flashes.

Also an external battery pack will help. BUT if you overdo it with an external battery pack you'll risk overheating the flash, and your one or two blank images will turn into waiting a minute for the flash to cool down.

Whilst the simple answer above is correct, an understanding of the technical wizardry of what's happening inside your flash unit will help you manage the situation better.

edit: Added for clarity, no flashgun in the world will keep up with the 7d with an enthusiastic shooting finger, understanding it all will really help.
