I have had a hankering for years and now am seriously looking to make a purchase. Discussing with a dealer recently he warned that the 503CX gave crisper edges to b&w shots which some people didn't like and for the CW they reverted back to the "normal" edges. I have never heard this before and its the one thing putting me off a CX that I have my eye on.

Any Hasselblad fans on here heard of this? Googling CX v CW focused on other aspects of the two but I can find no mention of crisp edges or otherwise.

TIA

The bodies all have slightly different features (although the amount of difference is minute compared to the number of features on 35mm SLRs). But, one thing doesn't change - light, lens, mirror up, film exposed, mirror down.

The features that the 503CX has compared to the 500C/M:
+ TTL OTF flash metering
+ winder capability

(from the superb photoethnography: http://photoethnography.com/ClassicCameras/Hasselblad500.html)

As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no basis at all for his comments. 'Crisper edges' - how can it give crisper edges to only one type of emulsion, but not colour negative or colour positive? A difference in the way different iterations of a lens renders pictures might have a bit more substance, but if anyone told you that your Dynax 9 produced 'crisper edges' compared to say, a Dynax 7, you'd know instantly that was absolute rubbish.

Film camera bodies are basically just elaborate light tight boxes.

The CW is newer and thus likely to be more expensive for a second hand model; this dealer wouldn't happen to have a CW handily in stock, would he? :bonk:

Make sure you read up on the differences between the V-series Hasselblads. For a lot of people, the 500C/M is more camera than they will ever need.

The camera is just a box, it's all about the lens.

Much more eloquently put by FC2

Well I've got an old 500c, serial number dates it at 1971 so its old and battered but it still works wonderfully. As long as you get a good body, the backs and lenses are what you should be looking at.
I think the dealer is leading you on a little.

As Google yielded nothing I did think it was BS.

500C/M was my preferred but was offered a CX for not a lot more - £899 with A12 back and 80/2.8. Being more recent I was giving it serious consideration.

Might just hold on and keep an eye on the BayofThieves for a decent 500C/M. Kicking myself for dithering and missing a mint example recently!

Thanks all

If that comes with a decent warranty, and you can get that down to £850, I'd give it serious consideration. The cost of a decent CLA on a 500C/M kit (if necessary) + the cost of buying a 500C/M kit in the first place would bring the monetary difference to very little.

Personally, I'd avoid eBay for kit like this. Hasselblads have a reputation for being a tad unreliable at times, especially ones which have had a lot of professional use, and buying a 500C/M (which could be 30+ years old) without much of a warranty or assurance is a risky gamble IMO.

I need a Hasselbald too.

Am looking at 500 C/M too. Have seen a few with dealers at the £600-£700 range

Well my credit card is quietly smouldering in the background here and a 503CX is on it's way to me. There was another one, mintier than a minty thing and doesnt even appear to have a scratched bottom (they all do that sir..... ) so I took the plunge.

A12 back, 80 2.8 CF and a little more than I wanted to pay but a better lens than the first. And there is a roll of free film in there to which of course swayed it for me

Now I just need to explain to SWMBO what is in the box that will arrive tomorrow.....
